Bloomington's Public Library offers an awesome "Book Kit" where book clubs like this can check out 8-30 copies of any one novel at a time, for distribution and discussion. So I think we should take advantage! I especially like the idea of diversity in reading--as adults we often fall into a favorite type of material, but this could be a chance to really be exposed to literature we otherwise might not have read. I propose we take turns checking out a new Book Kit, so we each have an opportunity to engage other readers in what interests us most--the more diversity the better! I would love this to become personal--a way to make new friends and branch out in the community, so these meetings will be held in my home unless/until someone volunteers to host the next meeting. S/he who hosts the meeting chooses the book! The next month's book will be announced at the end of each meeting by the next month's host, and books can be distributed then.
I will try very hard to keep this updated with books we have already read, and what book we are currently reading, so new people can feel free to jump in any time!
Books Read To Date:
The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore
Calico Joe by John Grisham
The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf by Mohja Kahf
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell (Changed to Wonder by R.J. Palacio)
(Initially GWTW planned but group decided to change to Wonder. Also we plan to make our next meeting a working meeting. Before our next Meetup, everyone is to compile a short list of books they would like to read with the club. Not books that you have already read. Expect an email in the next few weeks.)
