Holiday Mixer / Year in Review / Fun Times

Come one come all!!!  Rather than have a single book topic for this meeting, I'm thinking we can all get together and have a nice night chatting about the books we've read this past year, books we love in general, and books we want to read in 2014. Of course while sipping drinks of choice.  No RSVP limit!

I have a few things planned, such as mystery book exchange!  Ala a white elephant, but maybe something you would want someone to actually read versus a gag book. But either way works. :-)  Additional details to follow.

This will also be what I'm calling a "Pass the Hat " meeting for the club's Meetup dues. Meetup charges Organizers $144 a year. Knowing this, quite a few people have asked if they could donate over the past year or so to this fee. Rather than trying to collect money at each meeting, which is what many groups do, I'm just going to ask this month for donations.  I setup the meeting so that people can opt to donate via Paypal, or if you have a blood feud with that evil corporation, donations can be made at the meeting in person to me. Either way, EVERY PENNY (minus service fees) will go directly to the club account, which I will open up so that everyone can see. If we collect more than the $144, the remainder will be on account for future payments, all visible to the group.

Here is the donate link:

This donation is 100% voluntary. No pressure, no big deal, donate if you feel like it. That's that on the boring money side. :-)

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing everyone! We all love books and I think this will be a great evening! We can also ponder:

1) What was Faulkner smoking?

2) Why so many young adult books?

3) What's with all the vampires?

Thanks to everyone who came out for the mixer on Monday night! It was a huge success and I think everyone had a blast. The great news is that we raised $145 which will cover us for 2014! (It costs $144 a year to run a Meetup site.) So thanks to everyone who donated! As a side benefit, all the books were purchased from local charity stores, such as Weave, St. Vincent de Paul and various Friends of the Library donation spots. So it was doubly good cause!

I'm not feeling very well (totally not contagious I promise!) so I won't be able to stay long but I don't want to miss it so I will drop in, and bring a gift book. =)

Just to clarify on the optional book exchange, the book can be new or used. It could be modern or classic. Something that you think someone might enjoy reading, even if it's a funny read. Just wrap it up or place in a bag or something so the picks are mysteries.

Exchanges after the swap are encouraged though! So feel free to look around and try to work a deal if you see something you would rather read or have picked a book that you have already read.

Hi members. As a special thanks to those who attend and opt to donate, I've made special thank you gifts. Those attending who donate at least $5 get to pick out a handmade book spine bookmark, which includes the original book as well. There is a wide variety to choose from. Special thanks to Kristin for helping out with this project.

Yeah, on the corner of Sutter and Decatur, across from the ice skating.

I will not be able to attend the mixer; have to go to SF. I am so disappointed because I had a wonderful book to give for the book exchange. (Actually its an awful book and after the recepient opened it in horror, I was going to sub the 'real' book.) I'll save it for next year.

Since I will miss the book discussion, I am reading Bill Bryson's new book, One Summer. Am learning a lot about Charles Lindbergh (what a feat!), Babe Ruth and flapole sitting (was all the rage in 1927). Read it for great entertainment.

    See you all in 2014.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
