Monthly Meetup: Fixing Fixed Headers

Fixed headers have become a mainstay in the industry, but as with any user interface technique, there are trade offs, implementation details and the right way and wrong ways to go about adding fixed headers to a site.

Front End Engineer Nick Dreckshage and Product Manager Marcus LaBrecque, both at Wayfair.com & Joss and Main, will take an in-depth look at the ins and outs of fixed headers and how they fit into the modern website from both a UX and coding perspective.

Marcus LaBrecque

Marcus is a Product Manager for Wayfair.com | Joss and Main.  Wayfair.com is the largest online-only retailer of home furnishings and house wares in the United States.  Joss and Main is backed by the financial and operational strength of Wayfair.com and offers home-focused private sales.  Marcus studied fine arts in college but found his passion was in designing usable web interfaces.  Marcus is a part of an agile software development team that designs, builds and manages the creation of new features for Joss and Main and sections of Wayfair.com.  His projects focus primarily around e-commerce site conversion improvements and utilizing social media APIs, such as Facebook’s Open Graph, to increase user engagement on site.

Nick Dreckshage

Nick is a Front End Engineer/JavaScript for Wayfair.com and Joss and Main. Nick's interest in Front End technology began while studying Political Science and History in Washington D.C. He then started working as a Graphic/UX designer for Joss & Main, before switching to the engineering team to focus on PHP/HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript. He recently released an open source jQuery plugin, RoughDraft.js, on Github, and he is an avid Boston Celtics fan (with a Tommy Heinsohn jersey).

I appreciated it as well. Learned some things & it got me thinking a little differently about headers. Thanks!

Can't make it - flying home from Germany that night. I use the jQuery Data Tables plug-in. http://www.datatables.net/ I even found an add-on to let it work in ASP.NET Webforms.
Hopefully someone will post the best solutions.

Really looking forward to this. I used a fixed header at www.edwon.org . A pain to style, but worth it. Feel free to check out my portfolio at www.goldfarbdev.com. thanks. Greg Goldfarb
