This month, we're back to our standard two speaker format.

Stuart Popejoy will be giving a talk about composing music using Haskell, and Adam Wespiser will be giving a talk on using Haskell in the financial industry.

We will need to start at 7pm Sharp, just in case Akamai is strict on having us leave at 9.

7:00-8:00: Adam Wespiser - Creating a Domain Specific Language to Analyze Financial Data

In the course of my work two interesting problems have come up designing a DSL for data analysis: generalizing built-in operations to accept vectorized objects, and abstract data frame object for aggregation. The aim of this talk is to share my code, specifically an evaluation strategy for primitive data types, to demonstrate how we can write languages expressive enough for domain experts to extract meaningful insight. More broadly, this talk will cover 3 issues: Programming language design, exploration of data, and Haskell for industry applications.

8:00-9:00: Stuart Popejoy - Composing (Music) in Haskell with Braids, Isos and XSDs

Making a computer "talk music" is hard. Modelling musical data in code is ungainly, leading to highly opinionated and stylized DSLs. "Fadno", an umbrella project for music composition, seeks to leverage Haskell's facility for translation between structures and representations. It offers output to MusicXML via a reasonably ambitious attempt to model any XSD schema as a type model. Finally, it presents work in using braid theory as a generative model for music composition, including braid moves as infinite (co)data.

Speaker Bios:

Adam Wespiser:

Adam is a software developer at Elsen, ( http://elsen.co ), a Boston based start-up using Haskell to make portfolio analysis faster and easier. Previously, Adam was a biology researcher: focusing on how to apply statistical methods on large data sets to better understand the human genome. His interests include programming language design, statistics, machine learning, type theory, and start-up engineering. http://github.com/adamwespiser/resume

Stuart Popejoy:

Stuart Popejoy is a musician and software engineer in Brooklyn, NY. He leads a Haskell group at JP Morgan working on blockchain technologies, which recently open-sourced three projects: Juno, Masala and Hopper. His background is in trading and exchange systems, involving low-latency engineering and distributed systems. He is an active player in the NYC creative music scene, leading the avant-metal band "Bassoon" and participating in numerous improv, jazz and noise projects. Notable collaborators include Sarah Bernstein, Mick Barr, Kris Davis, Ches Smith, Ron Anderson, Chris Cochrane and Brian Chase.

Logistics:

If you can, please plan on arriving between 6:45pm and 7pm, but there will be someone in the lobby to greet stragglers.

Food:

Pizzas, salad and soda.

Afterwards:

If you'd like to stick around, a number of us tend to head down to the CBC (http://www.cambrew.com/) or another pub afterwards to socialize. If you would like to give a talk or if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to follow up here or email one of the organizers.
