AltspaceVR

Share a room and the web with anyone in the world! Attend or create events, share web content with others in real time, browse the web, and play web powered 3D apps. AltspaceVR is a shared VR experience - a communication platform focused on natural communication, intuitive UI, and real-time sharing of web content. Users in AltspaceVR can watch Netflix or YouTube, play tabletop games, or give a presentation - together and entirely inside of VR. Developers can use the AltspaceVR SDK to easily build VR apps and experiences. AltspaceVR has raised $15.5M in funding from investors including Tencent and Google Ventures.

Bruce Wooden, Head of Developer Relations at AltspaceVR, will be giving an overview of some of the newest features of AltspaceVR along with a live coding demonstration of the AltspaceVR SDK. The AltspaceVR SDK enables developers to rapidly build contained VR experiences and apps using the power of three.js and web code.

Bruce is known in VR circles as Cymatic Bruce, an active industry evangelist since 2013. He has participated in more than 700 VR experiences and accrued millions of views on video and live-streamed content. Bruce co-founded Silicon Valley Virtual Reality (SVVR) in May 2013, which has grown to 3,000 members and hosts an annual conference.

You know what was pretty cool...while I wasn't able to make the meetup in person, I did jump into Altspace for a bit tonight with my Gear VR to hang and chat with a few of who were trying out Altspace at the meetup. It was a pretty cool feeling being able to connect with a community in VR where I'm usually connected physically.

Awesome to hear, I'm sure it's a pretty straight forward solution for Altspace to get working, but if any testing or dev work is needed to get it running I can offer some help.

    February 24, 2016

    • Les N.

Yup, I just checked email threads, not sure why Meetup is implying I'm on the waiting list but I know I registered when the mtg. was first announced. So, I'm driving in! :)

VR@MIT (http://vratmit.com/), a new group fostering VR entrepreneurship and community at MIT, will be hosting a mini-VR expo and we're looking for local VR companies, developers, entrepreneurs to conduct demo's. The mini-expo will begin at 7PM on 2/29, following a lecture. We're open to anyone participating, even if your product/project is still a work in progress. The only requirement is that you bring your own HMD and computer. This is a great opportunity to show off your product or project to the MIT VR community. If you're looking to build your brand or find collaborators, then you should definitely participate!! If you'd like to participate, please reach out to me ([masked]) and I'll send you the details. If you'd like to attend but not participate - the event is currently only open to the MIT community but we have a waitlist that we can add you to.

If you have questions - I'll be at the Altspace event on Wednesday if you want chat. Thanks!

    Jacob

Thanks to a generous extra donation from AltspaceVR, we can rent the Havana room, again, and hold 215 people, like last time. The way people are signing up, it looks like we are going to need it!

Yeah... my pay now button is grayed out.
But then again someone RSVP'd me before I even did haha.

    February 6, 2016

    • Jeffrey J.

Me am confused. Does that mean you are registered and paid?

      February 6, 2016

    • Jeff B.

I marked you as paid because you're a volunteer! Your money is no good here! :)

      3 · February 6, 2016

  • Liz S.

How do you pay for this thing? The app doesn't bring me to a payment screen when I try.

    February 3, 2016

    • Liz S.

Got it in browser. It just didn't work on the mobile app for some reason. See you soon!

Meetup sucks. A lot. It wouldn't be an issue if they didn't also charge us $180 a year!

      February 3, 2016

  • Michelle "Kenobi" O.

Oh the irony, that the first time I can make it to a BVR in months, it's AltSpace who I am seeing at the Salt Lake VR Meetup this weekend. Haha!

    February 2, 2016

    • Jeffrey J.

      Well, come by anyway! We

      1 · February 2, 2016

    • Jeffrey J.

We'll have lots of other demos too.

      1 · February 2, 2016

  • Jeff B.

If you are bringing a demo please let us know so we can manually RSVP you and mark you as paid. We are charging a fee to cover part of the cost of this event. Please know that we are a non-profit 501c3 organization and all proceeds will go towards more VR events in Boston (and more pizza)!

Can I bring my 13 year old boy to this event?

    1 · January 20, 2016

Kids are welcome but they will need an RSVP. You can use a nickname for the username but when you RSVP you'll get a pop-up where you can type in the real name for the security list.

We will keep names entered this way, strictly confidential.
