Job Interviews
·OnlineOnlineIn today's job market, many technical writers are submitting dozens of applications before getting a single interview. When the opportunity does finally come along, what should you expect? In this meetup, we'll compare notes on technical writing interviews. If you've been interviewed recently, or if you’ve participated in interviewing someone else, we'd love to hear what the process was like. Come share your experiences and make the interview process a little less mysterious.
-
If you've been interviewed recently, what did the overall process look like? How many interviews were there, and who did you meet with (hiring manager, writers, engineers, etc.)?
-
What interview questions stood out to you? Were there questions you expected but never got asked? Were there any questions that surprised you?
-
Did you complete a writing exercise or other practical assessment? What was it like? In hindsight, would you have done anything differently?
-
Did you share a portfolio? How much attention did interviewers give it?
-
Looking back, what advice would you give someone preparing for an interview? What tips and techniques have helped you put your best foot forward?
-
If you've participated in interviewing job candidates, what qualities were you trying to evaluate? What made candidates stand out in a positive way?
-
What kinds of writing exercises or portfolio reviews have you found most useful? What do they reveal that a conversation alone doesn't?
-
What common mistakes have you seen candidates make? Were there missed opportunities that otherwise strong candidates could have avoided?
-
Has the interview process changed over the past few years? Have AI tools, remote work, or evolving job expectations altered what candidates need to demonstrate during the hiring process?
-
If you could redesign the hiring process, what would you change? How could interviews do a better job of helping both employers and candidates determine whether the role is a good fit?
