An Introduction to Using R with Hadoop

Jeffrey Breen, Principal with Big Data consulting firm Think Big Analytics, will provide an introduction to Hadoop, including its MapReduce programming paradigm, and an overview of the various methods of using R with Hadoop. Jeffrey will provide a deep-dive into using the RHadoop package, including some sample code, and tips on how to get started using these tools yourself.

There was one question about joining multiple data sets. My answer focused on Hive (my first choice for relational operations in Hadoop), but I also should have mentioned rmr2's equijoin() function. It will perform inner and outer joins. But if you're just doing joins, I'd still recommend Hive for those steps because it will be faster.

This talk was much better than the R+Hadoop presentation given this past Summer. However, there's such a concern people in the audience do not know anything about Hadoop & a desire to be inclusive that the talk really was just "An Intro to Hadoop by an Excellent R User." I think this topic of R+Hadoop may be doomed to never be presented well to a general audience. Perhaps we can organize a breakout group of R users who already regularly use Hadoop to have a discussion session? Forgive me, but my tolerance for hearing "how map reduce works" has run out, even when well-presented. Maybe we can have an R presentation someday where it's assumed you already know & use the Hadoop ecosystem. I think there are more than a few of us & we could learn a lot from each other.

I agree with this. Being already familiar with R and Hadoop, I had hoped that the talk would have focused more on how they work together.

more emphasis on R. It took 1 hour before the speaker started talking about R

The many questions should have been managed better. It took almost two hours to complete the formal presentation.

Agree - I was about to pass out at around 7.30, but the second half of the presentation was beautiful!

Note: we changed the location of the meeting to the
Broad Institute to accommodate the larger than expected interest.

The address is 415 Main St., Cambridge
and it is just a few blocks from the Kendall T.

The Broad auditorium can hold over 200 which should cover all the current interest plus some.

    See you all next week.
