Backcountry Skiing and Ice Climbing in Ouray!

Join us for a backcountry skiing and ice climbing trip to Ouray, CO over the Presidents Day weekend. The San Juan mountains near Ouray have the most incredible backcountry skiing that I have experienced in Colorado. There are fantastic lines with huge vertical drops through deep champagne powder. The Ice Park in Ouray is an awesome place to climb ice with hundreds of fat lines and is only minutes from town. We can also soak our muscles at night in the famous Ouray Hot Springs and Orvis Hot Springs.

We will drive to Ouray on Friday night, Feb. 17th, stay in Ouray Fri night, Sat, Sun, and then drive home in the late afternoon on Monday, Feb. 20th. Our tentative plan is to backcountry ski on Sat, ice climb on Sun, and backcountry ski on Mon. But people are welcome to ski or ice climb on whatever days they want, or do whatever makes them happy. I have some ice tools and crampons that people can borrow, or you can rent your own gear in Ouray. We can set up multiple ice climbing lines so people can try different routes.

We will pile in some cheap motel rooms in Ouray to keep costs down. I have reserved a room in the Comfort Inn in Ouray with 2 queen beds for $78 a night. I can sleep on the floor and we can put at least 4-5 more people in the room to make it cheap. Maybe someone else can reserve another room to accomodate more people if they sign up. People are also welcome to get their own lodging if they prefer.

Snowshoers are welcome to join us on the backcountry ski trips. Doggies are welcome too. We will avoid skiing avalanche terrain on the ski trips, so we will try to ski low-angle slopes to minimize avalanche risk. You will want skins if you ski with us.
