Being a (Non-Tech) Founder: Contributing without Coding

Being a (Non-Tech) Founder: Contributing without Coding

Tuesday, December 4th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Zach Goodman, Entrepreneur

Founding a startup is like putting together a puzzle with no picture on the box and all the pieces fit together in 1000 wrong ways for every right one. There are dozens of questions to answer before even thinking about coding a piece of software: Why this? Why now? Why you? In this class for first-time founders, the instructor will step through how he answered those questions en route to remaking himself from writer to tech entrepreneur. You will learn how to approach the non-tech responsibilities of being a founder and how to contribute to a tech company without writing code, focusing on product development and market fit. The class will then put those skills to the test with a group consulting session for a startup chosen from class. The instructor warns you that these are only his opinions and you should be skeptical of him, yourself, and everyone else, but he will make up for that by showing funny pictures.

Zach Goodman is a marketing copywriter turned UX designer turned product lead turned entrepreneur. He has most recently been in charge of a large tech project in Newark, NJ. Zach has also founded a startup, Unlockable, in which he has made every possible mistake, including spending a $20,000 investment on building a prototype that completely bombed.

Really enjoyed this talk. Got me thinking about how too often I try to put the cart before the horse. Thanks for opening my eyes!

I'm so thrilled that everyone got so much from the talk! Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements or topics you'd like covered that I didn't reach. This event is a little startup for me too, which means I've got to keep improving it.

Hi all, looking forward to spilling the contents of my brain for you tomorrow. I've got a quick request to help everyone get the most out of the program:

If you're working on an idea, I'd like your one-sentence pitch! Write them into the comments here, or come armed with them tomorrow. Half of the program is group consulting to get a few of you some hands-on help moving your ideas forward, so if you'd like some free consultation, send over those one-sentence pitches.

Perfect subject. Good to know I’m not the only one navigating a tech start up who doesn’t code!

Patrick, Loved your Idea...Best of luck. I'm in the ad world as well (creative /art), it sounds like your giving back to the people who have given you so much. Way to stand-up for the mom and pop!

Very enjoyable and informative evening. I liked the split of presentation and group consulting/critiquing of the pitch.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
