Lambda expressions in Java 8

With the launch of Java 8, the language has just gained one of the must-have features for functional programming: functions (specifically, lambda expressions). This month, in association with Functional Brighton, we'll do a live-coding exploration of what this looks like, and what it gives you, including a look at streams in Java 8.

There will also be a brief summary of Java 8's other features and whether it is time to switch.

We'll be meeting at the Skiff, with doors open at 7pm, and talks starting around 7:45. RSVP to help us get an idea of numbers. Beer, pizza and soft drinks will be available courtesy of Brandwatch, who are sponsoring this month's event.

An excellent evening I enjoyed both presentations thanks to everyone involved with the event. The beer and pizza was very much appreciated.

Really enjoyed the talk last night, I even had a possible eureka moment when I thought of a Cryptology use for Streams :D Many Thanks to all who were very welcoming to me on my first meet!

Really enjoyed the talk. Very well presented.

I think I got more out of it having seen this talk by Simon Ritter at QCon this year. Others may appreciate the link:

An exceptionally clear and well paced talk that not only explained the how but also the why which many presentations on Java 8 miss. Looking forward to the next one!

Cracking good talk - potentially dry topic tackled with enthusiasm and clarity. Scored several 'lightbulb moments' for me. Now, about that IDE upgrade...

Real good talk, many thanks to those who organised it.
Looking forward to using lambdas etc. Finally java gets macros, so it might be useful after all ;-)

I found the talk really interesting and was surprised how much of it I understood.

Hi Guys, I'm seriously considering coming along tomorrow, however I have very little programming experience and so I am not sure if this would be the right group to start with? I have basic PHP, HTML and CSS knowledge but haven't done any real programming beyond my Commodore Basic days :(

The talk part of the evening will be about the new features of Java, so that might be a little hard to follow without previous Java experience. You're more than welcome to come down and meet people though.

Last time we didn't get through all of the beer and pizza. This time you must try harder!
