HPA street party gig

  • September 7, 2013 · 5:30 PM

We're on at 5.30, soundcheck at 1pm. We have up to 40 minutes. There's a space theme so be good to do at least one themed. Please only sign up if you have time to attend a few rehearsals.

Also, not pushin' or nuffink, but in case no-one else can, should, or is otherwise inclined to, I (and Al, of course) would find it no great burden to to 'host' a 'meet-up' on the 18th, were one to find itself otherwise homeless..

Video performances are the way to go - As 'showreel' demos or as end-products in themselves. 'Uploaded', they carry the potential (whether one ends up liking the fact or not) to live forever in cyberspace, or go suddenly 'viral' and, particularly in the case of original works or original treatments of existing works (about cats?), launch random international 'celebrity' careers. Tour of Japan, anyone? Songs don't have to be recorded in the same 'sitting', with the same 'look'. Environments can be optimised/selected for the purpose, 'styled' to suit the arrangement or mood of each. While 'simple' is usually best, all manner of illusory visual wonderments can be applied with the use of minimal 'stagecraft', backed up by computational wizardry.

All that is required is the intent, some free-ranging discussion of 'concepts' and resources, and the plan of action that would likely fall rapidly thereafter into place.

The rest is future history.. Und it vill be GLORIOUS!!!

A great suggestion Linden. However I think we should do a Video Performance if we are going to try and market ourselves for gigs. Certainly my copy of the event is OK for a souvenier of our first outdoor gig for AJ members but the quality (in my view) is not good enough for promoting ourselves.

I will liaise with our Technical Director for his view on proceedings. Steff do you have a view?

Ok fair point, we'll have to find anther gig first to video it!

Very funny Steff............never saw HIGTTG but now having checked out Arthur Dent on the net I can recognise the resembelance.

    Linden
Aound quality is not terrific but between Steff and myself we should have reasonably watchable material. I think we got all the songs. When I get back I will put it online. We showed a couple of extracts to our friends and quote one of the females........"Oh the guy on the end looks really cool"........meaning you of course. There are some very amusing moments off stage so keep your eyes pinned on what is going on in front of the stage.

    Sept 18
As John in away on the 18th has anyone offered to host the Acoustic Jam evening? Being 18 miles away does not make it feasable for me to host on a Wednesday evening.

(good looking & single too! though i think they may have meant cool bass dude Dave!)

Maybe John, Stef, between you could you could make a short edited demo highlights video that we could put online to help get more gigs?

Didn't see the guy in the pyjamas and slippers, but in the event that he wasn't just some poor disconnected unfortunate, working nights, trying to sleep, looking for someone with whom to register a complaint, he could only have been 'Arthur Dent' from The Hitchhikers Guide To The Universe..

Great gig guys, well done. Really enjoyed it and we made a great sound. Looking forward to the next one...

I've had very positive feedback from people in the audience. Let's all look out for more gig opportunities to keep the momentum going - charity benefits etc. Well done all. Cheers, Linden

Had a great time yesterday, guys. I think some very special music is going to grow out of what we're doing. Looking forward to it.

    See you soon

    Short synopsis Steff............for you!

Fabulous experience and great to have the opportunity to play some music with such a talented bunch of guys. Away now, but video to follow later in the week. If nothing else it shows we can provide a satisfactory musical back drop to Luke Skywalker inpersonators, Space Hopper races, Light Sabre fights..............oh and some on screen kissing. I never did quite understand who the guy who was impersonating who was walking around in his pyjamas and slippers.............anyone have a clue?

September 8th, 0147hrs, The remainder of the day a delight. OK, didn't make the 1530hrs thing, but no worries. The rest of the blokes turned up with time to spare plus the projected schedule was running 'late' (pretty well as expected, given that schedules given in advance of such events, nearly always turn out to represent wildly optimistic guestimates at best of the probable timelines. The chaps took the stage in leisurely fashion. Plugging in and sound-checking segued (with only minor hick-ups) into performance, and off we all launched into yet another well-received tres bonza musical extravaganza.. As 'old blue' of legend used to say - 'She'll be right, mate!' And she was..

September 7th, 1435hrs, Saturday off to a fine start.. Sudden emergency at home required temporal re-prioritisation on the fly (anyone who would have behaved differently is not what Aussies call 'a proper bloke' and I wouldn't piss in their ear if their brain was on fire). With telephonic communication seemingly going out of style, discovered I didn't have anyone's number, so unable to update group in real-time.. Went to the site, ascertained situation, introduced self, arranged parking permission and acquired new timeline. Deduced probable location of group.

Stopped by to reassure, inform and ascertain disposition of group. Left to check back at home.. Kicked myself for STILL not taking down anyone's number, as I could have called by to pick up instruments and a body or two.. Might do this on spec around 1530hrs just the same..

    Ongoing..

My only observation is that John P and I will need to swap places for Ho Hey, so maybe finish with it?

    Sounded great last night guys.

I have updated the notes on song structure etc. from Wednesday's rehearsal & put in the files folder ("version 2").

Also we need to figure out a set list. How about the following:

    1. You aint going nowhere
    2. Ho Hey
    3. Brown eyed girl
    4. The Joker
    5. Roll in my sweet baby's arms
    6. Sweet Virginia
    7. Wagon wheel

Feel free to suggest moving the songs around...

    John

      set list fine by me

      September 6, 2013

  • Linden

Dave, might be an idea if you play the bass on The Joker? (just bin listening to original Steve Miller and bass is prominent) - I'm sure the rest of us can get it together with the chords. Alan, JohnP and I could have an extra run through saturday sfternoon if need be. Cheers, Linden

Sound engineer email update, sounds great.....
Hi Linden , ... we have DI boxes, plenty of mics, and a pro sound engineer, so everything is covered. For info, purely acoustic instruments can be micd up and taken to the desk no problem, and electro acoustic can be played with an amp or DI'd or both. Whatever, if anything needs attention it can be sorted.

    September 3, 2013

  • Alan

Had a little practice with Linden's recording of Girl From Mars, I've uploaded a short clip of it with some distorted guitar (played on my acoustic through the micro-amp). My timing is a bit off but that'll be sorted with a few more plays.

    September 2, 2013

    • Linden

Yeah, i like it too. You gonna do some percussion john? If we need more time to get it tight i could meet up with you Alan and whoever else has time after wednesday.

no prob stef,....its all good. Copy of it would be good some time.thx

  • Stef C.

    Hi all,

Just rendering a .mov of songs edited from our last rehearsal. Camera was set up in a hurry and got knocked early on so the picture's not centred on the group and Nick gets (mostly) left out (apologies). Plus Linden stands up in front of Alan most of the time. Sounds pretty damned good even so (would sound much better played in the daytime when the sound can go up a bit).

Full size file will be around 700 Mb for anyone who wants it and can turn up with a USB Flash Drive. I'll cut it down for upload to Vimeo when I figure out how..

FYI ... email i sent to event organisers/PA guy...

    Hi Conrad,

we're looking forward to next Saturday.

First, I have a question re. DI input - can your PA handle acoustic guitars plugged straight in? i.e. will the signals from the guitars be strong enough? I just bought a pick up from the big (yellow/red) music shop in the north lanes and the guy there says that we will need DI boxes too - do you have them? Band Name: Brighton Acoustic Jam Group
    Band members: 7
Set: 8 songs (30-40 mins - hopefully including Girl From Mars!)

    PA:
5 vocal microphones needed (2 lead vocals, 3 backing - we all sing at the same time on choruses!)
    We have:
    1 x electric bass
1 x radio mic headset (for violinist/and some vocals - he finds he can share for both)
1 ukulele small amp needs mic in front of
4 x acoustic guitar (direct to PA - NEED DI INPUT?)

    • Alan

If there's too many guitars I can run both bith guitar and uke through mini amp, just means I'll need to tweak the volume a bit between songs. And for Ho Hey, John and I could just swap?

I have typed up the various notes & comments on song structure for 7th Sept and put this in the files folder. (HPA_gig_notes_Sat7thSept_v1)

I have put a short recording in the files folder of the harmony parts I worked out for "Wagon wheel" (wagon wheel - harmonies 2). After 1min 30s, there is a separate recording of the two harmony parts. It would be great if you guys could have a go at singing these.

'Space - The final front ear' What does that even mean? Is it space for the final front ear? That's one questionable but likely available (in Eastern Europe - terms and conditions apply) surgical option. But if so, where does the first front ear go?
