EdTech Demos:
Newsela (https://newsela.com/) - @newsela
Newsela is an education technology startup dedicated to transforming the way learners access the world through words. The founding team members combine powerful technological know-how with real-world experience earned in the classroom, the newsroom, and the boardroom. Launched in June 2013, Newsela publishes high-interest news articles daily at five levels of complexity for grades 2-12 using Newsela’s proprietary, rapid text-leveling process. Common Core–aligned quizzes attached to articles give educators and parents insight into their students’ reading strengths and weaknesses. Newsela develops nonfiction fluency and critical-thinking skills necessary to master the Common Core standards for informational text.
EverFi (http://everfi.com) - @everfi
EverFi is an education technology company that partners with corporations and foundations to provide online learning courses to schools at no cost. EverFi’s courses aim to engage and teach students in a variety of critical skills such as STEM readiness, coding, entrepreneurship, financial literacy and digital literacy/citizenship. Our co-curricular, digital courses deliver content that engages 21st century learners by leveraging gamification, simulations, and assessments. Our standards-aligned courses provide meaningful metrics to teachers by not only measuring knowledge gains, but also student attitudes on these important skills.
Buncee (http://www.buncee.com) - @buncee
Buncee is a web-based creation and presentation tool that allows students and teachers to create engaging and interactive presentations, lesson plans, digital stories, research projects, and more using their in-house graphics and multimedia resources. Buncee has been integral in enhancing student engagement and creativity in classrooms within all 50 states in the US, as well as 127 countries worldwide.
ReadWorks (http://www.readworks.org/) - @readworks
The ReadWorks team is excited to unveil our new digital technology platform to the edTech meetup community. The new platform will begin serving teachers, students, and parents in 1-to-1 and blended learning environments this spring. The nonprofit ReadWorks is the leading venture in the United States for improving teacher effectiveness and student learning in reading comprehension.
ReadWorks provides the largest, highest-quality library of authentic nonfiction and literary articles in the country for K-12 students, along with carefully-selected vocabulary, formative assessment questions, and cognitive-science based reading comprehension lessons - all aligned to the Common Core and state standards. ReadWorks is free and meant to be shared broadly. With our current, non-digital website, ReadWorks has more than 650,000 active teacher users in more than 65,000 U.S. public schools, with 2,000 new teacher registrants joining every day. Additionally, 60% of our active users are in public schools where more than half of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
