How to Teach Data Science

Details
Speaker: Albert Y. Kim, Assistant Professor of Statistics, Department of Mathematics, Middlebury College
Abstract: In this presentation I will give both micro and macro level views of data science initiatives at Middlebury College.
On the micro-level, I will present the details of a new "Introduction to Data Science" course currently taking place, which only has introductory statistics and a familiarity (not proficiency) with R as prerequisites. In particular, I will go into detail on how I help students develop two of the most important tools in their data science toolbox: data manipulation / wrangling / munging and data visualization.
On the macro-level, I will present the details of a proposal for a new interdisciplinary data science minor to be co-administered by the mathematics and computer science department.
Most importantly however, I synthesize my experiences and detail how they have impacted my pedagogical philosophies and propose ideas on how to increase the appeal of data science/statistics to students from all disciplines.
Where: We'll be meeting in the Gallery at the Main St Landing Performing Arts Center, on the second floor. Follow the signs when you get inside.
There should be plenty of free parking in the Main Street Landing lot, see map (http://i.snag.gy/I4gnK.jpg), otherwise you can park any of the typical downtown spots.
