Traps and Snares

**No real or CGI animals will be harmed in this meetup.**

The idea of stalking the land with a self-bow and primitive arrows is a bit romantic. In a primitive survival setting the majority of food comes from insects, larvae, fish, and small game caught in traps. (A mouthwatering menu, I know.)

(A modified figure 4, bottom, then two paiute triggers with dogbane string.)

We'll make three or four traps, talk about placement, when to check, and practice setting them. Many survival books have catalogs of different traps with fancy triggers and while it's good to know a few types that work in different terrains, its best to have one or two traps down cold.

(A Paiute Deadfall.)

I've done considerable trapping in my work in Utah and have just used one or two traps over and over again.

The traps we'll build:

  • Paiute Deadfall
  • Modified Figure 4 Deadfall
  • Basic Twitch-up Snare

(Using your feet is helpful when setting a deadfall trigger.)

An excellent class with excellent people. The practical experience of creating traps and snares far outweighed reading about them in books. A job well done, Alex!

Here's my number if anything comes up. [masked]-1568. And remember, don't follow the GPS. Look for the Lewis & Clark parking lot.

How about some stuffed animals? Celia and I were thinking of rounding some up. ;-)
