I am offering a series of ongoing hikes that center around the Barred Owl nest tree in Tryon Creek State Park. The goal is to monitor the birds throughout breeding season and watch them raise their young. Barred Owls tend to perch in the open and are fairly immune to our presence - making this a wonderful opportunity to observe them going about their daily business.
The hikes are posted at the Wild Mind Outdoor Community Meet-up. For now, they are scheduled around dusk as that is when the birds can reliably be seen and heard. As the season progresses, the times and lengths of the watches will expand accordingly. It is not uncommon to be able to view these birds in the middle of the day.
Oh and Wild Mind events tend to fill FAST but there are often spots that open up so keep an eye out. Also, most organizers are usually willing to add someone who is genuinely interested and who will definitely show up. If the event is full, send the organizer a note and you will probably be added.
Hope to see you all on the trail!
