Is our large middle class an anomaly? Is it sustainable or are we watching it slowly disappear? Are the following signs of this: two tier health care, vast gap between average income and the richest people, triumph of greed- quantity (Walmart) over quality (Brettons, Eatons, individually owned stores), economic power shift from US to China......
Many factors contributed to a strong middle class; some of these have been weakened (e.g. unions and their benefits and workplace standards that influenced all workplaces, see Wisconsion; tarrifs, education system), or else no longer exist (e.g. post-war pent up consumer demand and decimated workforce).
Is it true that our children will be the first generation in a long time to see a drop in their standard of living or is that just middle-aged pessimistic grumpiness?
