Last night we had some layman's discussions and some of it was about what we don't know about the universe and a little talk about 11 dimensions was introduced. The 11 dimensions comes from M-theory - the theory that unifies the 5 competing string theories by adding an eleventh dimension (the other five had 10 dimensions). Below are a few links about M-theory and some other stuff. Most of it is written or produced for laypeople.

Whykipedia's Introduction to M-Theory

Some criticism of M-theory rests on our inability at this time to test the theory, and instead we rely on the mathematics alone. The theory is still incomplete and physicists have been working on it since the early eighties.

There are other competing theories being addressed to unify Quantum Mechanics and gravity. The comedy TV show The Big Bang Theory had an episode where the Quantum Loop Theory was debated as a better theory.
