Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: Norm Allen, Jr. is the Director of the Center for Inquiry's African Americans for Humanism , Deputy Editor ofFree Inquiry magazine and Co-Transnational Director of the Center for Inquiry

Norm will speak on the specific challenges of secular humanism and the African-American Community. Part of his message is that religion, particularly the Christian religion, has damaged African Americans?from justifying slavery to promising, ?Pie in the Sky, by and by, for those who accept submission.? While there have been some benefits from religion, such as after the Civil War, providing a venue to public respect for blacks, the damage caused is far more than any good. Christianity and other religions, mainly Islam, may have been a major cause of enslaving those ?inferior people? needing conversion. Likewise, the ignorant, literalist, fundamentalist religions in Africa are a curse. Humanism is a powerful antidote, b ut, lacking a ?kill the infidel and go to heaven? mentality, comes from a difficult position, offering not fanaticism, but science, medicine, reason and reasonableness, and practical ethics.
