Project Night

Let's actually write some real world Scala!

Let's face it - there aren't a ton of organizations promoting Scala in the #CLE area. Because of that, those of us interested in Scala development spin up little side projects, but are often looking to collaborate with others on something bigger / more meaningful that will give us a chance to really learn and push us past our comfort zones.

That being said, let's meetup and have a project kick-off.

A lot of us have some really good ideas for Scala projects and may have our own pet projects & open source projects we're already contributing to.

If you have a current project you'd like to work with others on, come prepared to pitch it to the group. If you have ideas for projects that you'd like to get started on, come prepared to pitch those.

By the end of the meetup I hope we can break out and pair up with some like minded folks about projects we're interested in and  push the start of anything we come up with to Github (if it isn't already there).

From here, we can start working with others in this area to get some serious hands on Scala experience.

In case I haven't made this obvious: No experience is necessary - just a strong desire to work on a project written in Scala. :)

Location is TBD so I'll make that announcement in the upcoming week.

Did anyone happen to take meeting minutes or anything like that? Curious what I missed. I also wonder if we should set up a wiki or something for things like meeting minutes.

Sorry you didn't get a chance to make it out Ricky! I grabbed a few photos of some notes taken and plan on compiling & throwing those out there soon for those who missed. I'll be setting up a Github repo for projects/ideas, learning paths, and meetup notes soon as well. I'll let you and the rest of the group know when I post those out there.

Great 1st meeting - good topics.

If the meetings at the University are predictable (every other week) we could look out a month and schedule the meetup in the off weeks. (If there is no other reason why Wednesday wouldn't work)

This should work in most cases. Occasionally (e.g. for weather reasons) the meeting gets pushed back a week, but I think generally this is fine.

I can't make the 12th, unfortunately :(. Would vastly prefer Thursdays from now on. I have meetings at my university every other Wednesday, so there is 50% of running into a conflict with those, if we stick with Wednesdays.

Thanks David and Steve. We'll see you on the 12th.

Just so everyone knows - the date's been changed to Wed. February 12th. Same great location. Thanks everyone! Hope you can make it.

Looks like the votes are in... I'm flexible as far as dates go with enough notice. I'll talk to Steve J. to see if this will be a problem / if anything is scheduled on the LeanDog boat that would prohibit a Wed. or Thurs. meetup. Will post a new day out there soon.

I would also prefer something on a Wed. or Thurs evening.

I'm sorry to be needy here because I'm excited about resuming these meetings, but is there another day that's available to do this? Fridays in general are not great (for me) and that particular Friday is a problem.
I know I should be careful of mutable data, but if there are not strong objections, could we do Wed or Thurs?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
