Global Warming -- Fact or Fiction? Presentation From 2 Experts On Climate Change

So.... is our climate getting warmer? Or is it not?

In a speech given to the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works on July 28, 2003, Senator James Inhofe concluded by asking the following question: "With all of the hysteria, all of the fear, all of the phony science, could it be that man-made global warming is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people?"

Clearly this made a great sound bite. A sitting US Senator claims that global warming is a hoax. On the other side of the argument are scientists with reams of data that purport to show that our climate is indeed getting warmer. Of course those of us in southern Ontario just have to look at this past winter, or lack thereof, and wonder.... is it global warming or it is some other phenomenon?

Well, here's your chance to get some accurate information from the horses' mouth so to speak. We are pleased to be partnering with the North York Physics Group, Toronto Friends Social Group, Soul City Social Club, Innovative Initiatives Co-op and others, in promoting this lecture with two experts in the field of climate science.

The first speaker, Lee Norton, is a certified speaker for the Climate Reality Project – Canada. In his presentation, Lee will present an up-to-date review of the current state of climate change and global warming. Lee spends much of his time keeping up with developments in his field and his presentation, “ 3 Degrees ” is continually updated as new information is published.

The second speaker, Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu is the Climate Change Critic for the Green Party. She has given a number of talks on carbon pricing, global warming and human rights, and frequently participates in public consultations and lobbying. She studied Anthropology at the University of Toronto, including a year of study with native Kaingang and Guarani in Brazil. She is an executive member of Post Carbon Toronto, and active with a number of other local Toronto groups, notably JustEarth, the Toronto Climate Campaign and The Next Generation.

The presentation will cover the following:

What science is forecasting. What is happening around the world now, such as rising sea levels and the great range in forecasts and why. The science of greenhouse gasses, solar effects, ice core data, global dimming and effect of aerosols. A look at targets from IPCC 450 ppm & 2 deg to Hansen’s 350 ppm and why 450 ppm would be disastrous. Remarks on Canada and muzzling of scientists. Comments on the IPCC and controversy. Getting There

The lecture is being held in the council chambers at North York Civic Centre.

The closest TTC subway stop is North York Centre. There is lots of parking underground (entrance is at the rear of the building, off Beecroft Rd.)
