3 day trip - July Long weekend

2 nights in Montana - 1,400km

Saturday: Calgary-Fernie-Eureka-Whitefish; Sunday: Whitefish - Eureka - Libby - Bigfork; Monday: Back to Calgary via Going-to-the-Sun highway - Babb - Pincher Creek - Cowboy trail

So, I finally booked 4 rooms at Pine Lodge, Whitefish on Saturday night $142/night. I just called and only one more room available, mini suite, $175/night. So the first 8 to sign up, your room is reserved. For the others you’ll have to take care of it yourself

I also booked 4 rooms at the Timbers Motel, Bigfork on Sunday night $115/night. many rooms available, easy to add few more if necessary.

I have uploaded a couple of videos. You can copy them from my dropbox at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ijp1mshakhkpesn/kD0D3yOrMY

The first video is of the Bad Larrys, and the second one is riding past the weeping wall.

You guys were fun! Someone that split early rode the next day in the blistering heat and ended up in emerg with IVs for heat stroke and almost kicked the bucket (but didn't)- lol. Seems some girls are hard to kill- lol
I really had fun and thanks for being such a cohesive group while riding; beautiful ride indeed
And, how could I forget to mention the interest in camels! Thanks Simon for organizing it!

It was fantastic! Even though some of us had to split early, someone lost a wallet but then realized it was still there, someone's purse and camera went flying out of her trunk after hitting a huge bump, , someone got shit by the Sherriff for being stop in the middle of the road while someone collected her things from someone who so graciously collected them for her, someone almost got stopped by the cops. NO this was not all me!! Hey it could have been worse, someone could have been shot!!

Simon I have a set of 2 way radios with head sets. Range is up to 40kms, but in most cases it amounts to about 20km. Whoever leads can borrow one set and the person at the back can use the other. On trips of this distance people often get seperated and it is hard to track them done especially when we do not have the cell phone coverage. Also useful when communicating from room to room for early morning breakfasts meetups or a change in plans. The only thing is that whoever takes this on is has to fiddle with there helmet before heading out so as to get the fit with the speakers and the microphone optimized. What is the location for the meet up before we head out ?

@Donna: I have a scala rider G4. I believe it is compatible with your G9 system.

Also, my 2nd headset is installed in my passenger helmet. If anyone wants to borrow that they are welcome to.

Hi y'all. I'm ride down to Whitefish with you Saturday morning and then head down to Kalispell to visit with some friends there. Next day to Missoula so I won't need the accommodtions. Still a room space available I guess so I'll switch to not attending.

Yes, thanks for all the planning and coordinating!!!! Must appreciated
I don't care about any choices except avoiding gravel

I'm good with any options. Thanks for doing all of this planning!

Downtowner was full. so I booked 4 rooms at Pine Lodge, $142/night tax included, including 2 queen beds.

For the 2nd night, 3 options:
    1- stay at the Pine lodge;
2- Bigfork, @ Timbers Motel for $115/night (15 rooms available). There's the Riverbend Concert Series With The Bad Larrys, live music for $3/person.
3- Columbia Falls, Glacier Inn Motel, 2 type of rooms. 2 queen beds for $120/night (3 available) or 1 queen, and 2 twin beds for $140/night (2 available). Some restaurants/pubs at walking distance. I never stopped in Columbia Falls, so I don't know what we can do. But close to Glacier Park for our Monday ride.

Hey Simon I really like #2. I know someone in Bigfork and would love for us to stop by his place so I can meet his family. Coincidentally I did tell him I would try to make it out there this summer. We would just stay for maybe an 1 hour if that. Plus sounds fun.

      June 2, 2013

    • Vern

I'd vote for option 2 as well. Live music is always good.

Will be riding to Seattle and Victoria that weekend.

I am happy with any choice and prefer to never back track if possible. But even with that being said.... I am good with anything as long as I have wind blowing in my face. I could care less where we sleep; expensive or flea bag rat hole. I'd like to be at the hotels with bars for visiting in the evenings with locals if it is an option. I don't care where we eat- steak house or grocery store with a flip open can of beans eating on the side of the road! I don't care about anything but riding so what ever.... and I am happy:)

Simon... I'm only a maybe for this trip, but I usually stay at the Pine Lodge in Whitefish... a great hot tub and only a 10 minute walk to downtown. (406) 862-7600. I've also stayed at the Timbers Motel in Bigfork near Flathead Lake (406)[masked] (it's nothing fancy but I'd stay there again). Good luck.

A good biker friendly location is the Downtowner Inn in Whitefish which is right downtown (seems obvious). We rented a 3rd floor room there last year that has a bedroom with 2 queens, a bedroom with a twin bed, a dorm room with 8 single beds and a full kitchen. It's also right next to the hot tub and a block away from the best pubs.

  • Simon P.

In option #2, there's a 25km of dirt road. Are you OK with that? I'll call this weekend to get motel/hotel info.

    May 28, 2013

    • Donna

Option without gravel is my preference

      May 30, 2013

    • Vern

Yes we did get lost at dusk going to Salmon Arm. I also seem to remember someone running out of gas. Hmm

      June 1, 2013

  • Trevor V.

I like both but I feel I'm a bit of a slow rider and don't want to mess up your trip with a slow poke. Please feel free to say if you think this could be a problem.

    May 31, 2013

    • Simon P.

No worries Trevor. We rode together many times, you're just fine. And we'll have fun.

      May 31, 2013

    • Donna

      Yup. It will be wonderful.

      May 31, 2013

With your comments, let's do oPtions #1 with a small change. I called at many places in Whitefish and i couldn't find 3 rooms for 2 night. I'll try to find something in Kalispell. If you have any suggestion let me know.

No gravel option for me. I like to ride and enjoy also so i think as long as we all have our route we just meet up at main stops so riding speeds are all fine
