Mount Hector

(Copied mostly from Michael's March 1st trip posting, thank you Michael!)

Mt Hector is the quintessential Ski tour of the Rockies. Where else out here can you get a vertical mile of skiing. So weather/avalanche conditions permitting we will try to bag this one. We will start up at the trail head just before dawn.

In order to get a well-rested, yet early start, we will stay at the Lake Louise Hostel the night before, leaving Calgary at 6 PM.

This is not an easy tour: it involves moving throughglaciated and complex terrain, and a long ascent (close to 1,600 m vertical). We will be travelling on 2 roped teams.

Because I have pre-booked 6 spots at the LL hostel: in order to move from the wait list first I will contact you then you will need to send me the $32.00 dorm fee(you get a $3 cash return from me at the hostel if you are  HI member and show your membership card then). So make sure that you can attend before signing up for the trip. After you have paid, you will get a refund only if we were able to find a replacement.

Please note if avi and weather conditions are unfriendly we will go skiing somewhere else in a less complex terrain.

Ski and General Gear required:

Avalanche beacon, probe, shovel,

Skis (Alpine touring or telemark only), boots, poles, skins, ski crampons (optional)

Headlamp, bivi sac (or tarp)

Layers and down jacket, toque, warm gloves, googles, sun glasses,

Crampons that fit your ski boots, mountaineering axe, helmet

Food, snacks, water + thermos container with hot water

Glacier travel gearrequired:

ATC device

4 locking carabiners, 4 non-locking carabiners, 1 ice screw

2 ski ties

2 x 1.20 m slings, 3 prussic cords, 7 mm

We will likely have pit stop in Lake Louise on the way back. Do not make any plans to return to Calgary soon on Saturday night!

Make sure that you have paid for a 2012/2013 membership with the CSMC. Payment can be made online or at the meeting location. Waivers are mandatory for every trip and can be printed online or filled out at the meeting location. Cost for membership with the CSMC is $20 for 2012. Great conditioning trip at Mount Hector yesterday, with excellent team work and spirit.

Some hardships on the way down the mountain, with whiteout and light blizzard conditions to manage. Plus some sections of the 50 m bootpack to the summit proved to be icy and required belaying. Not much fun skiing down the glacier in braking mode due to poor visibility, but we got a few great turns once off the glacier.

    Sorry Guys,

Unforeseen circumstances are preventing me from attending this trip. My apologies and I look forward to attending one in the future.
