This is rather last minute for this week, but a couple of us are heading up Prairie Mountain Wednesday evening for some exercise and I'll extend this to 6 additional club members. This is an easy hike for regular scramblers. The trailhead starts at the winter gates for Hwy 66 west of Bragg Creek and heads up into the trees from there.
As part of a push to up my own vertical conditioning, I will be posting more evening trips during the week. Prairie is a popular exerciser mountain for a lot of clubs. Estimated trip time: 4-5 hours. I'm guide's pace ... not trying to hit any trail runner records here. The expectation for this trip is to keep a consistent pace, but if you are an uphill speed maniac, my trips wouldn't be a good fit for you. At night, I prefer to keep participants spaced a bit tighter together, so I will stop to re-group frequently if needed. I tend to keep a brisker pace downhill and on the straights, so there's the guideline on what to expect.
Total Group size: 8
Meetup time: 6:30 PM at Shouldice arena parking lot.
Distance: 6.8 kms return
Elevation gain: 686m
Gear required: hiking poles, warm clothes and shell layers, gloves (please!), water/snacks, gaiters, microspikes and headlamp (with extra batteries). Please make sure you have the last two items - the trails can, and do, get very icy.
Possible Hazards: Weather changes, ice on trail, my sense of humor.
To participate you need to have your 2013 CSMC membership paid. The preferred payments method is online. Waivers are mandatory for every trip and you will be asked to sign the master waiver at the meeting location. Cost for membership with the CSMC is $20. Bring extra money to share car pooling costs.
