Title: Our Future in Big Data Science

Abstract:Everywhere we look, 'big data' and 'data science' are the buzzwords being used for all manner of data-related activities. Where does statistics fit into this picture?

Ever larger datasets are being collected and used to tackle a range of questions. We are quickly going beyond the capability of single computers and single individuals to do the analyses. In this environment, how can we statisticians make useful and significant contributions?

I will introduce a few large projects I have been involved with, both in an academic and a commercial context, and give my perspective on the factors that drove their success or failure. From this I will draw out what I see are the key skills that we need to foster, both individually and collectively, to be able to shape the data analysis projects of the future.
