Staten Island Sport Divers Meetup
Details
Please note that the club website can be found at www.sisportdivers.org - check it out!
The next club meeting will be at Ruddy & Dean Steakhouse, second floor private room, 44 Richmond Terrace, across from the Richmond County Ball Park and the SI Ferry. Date is July 7th and time is 7PM.
This month's guest is Jim Scarcella, Trustee of the Natural Resources Protective Association. This group is dedicated to fighting pollution and promoting conservation in our area. When the Army Corps of Engineers said that the "borrow pits" just off our shore could be dumped in with all sorts of waste and capped, the NRPA proved in court that they were teeming with life and stopped the plan in its tracks. Tony Rose, our club Environmentalist and CPR Guru, is a longtime member of the NRPA and can chronicle their battles won over the years, but let's let Jim Scarcella do it, perhaps joined by NRPA President Kerry Sullivan, who is bravely fighting a battle of his own right now.
Along the same lines, NRPA, SISD and the NYC Parks Dept. did a Beach Cleanup at Wolf's Pond Park on June 12th from 9am to 12 noon. This was be the third beach cleanup thet we have participated in this year. The first was the fishing pier and beach at the end of Sharrot's Road, attended by Tony Rose, SISD VP Pat Kearns, Kevin Athing, Rich Dewar and myself. The second beach cleanup (New Dorp Beach) saw the debut of our new SISD BBQ Grill, which was used to cook several dozen hotdogs for the hungry beach cleaners. SISD veteran divers Kevin Athing (our new webmaster) and Rich Dewar (our liason with the Richmond County Ballpark) were in the water recovering whatever had accumulated from our last cleanup there late in 2009. The NRPA and NYC Parks and Recreation organized the topside activities, and the beach was immaculate by 12 noon.
And on a nearby island...
Don't forget the RV Garloo out of Captree State Park, famous for providing access to the USS San Diego and Oregon, among others. Call Captain Hank Garvin at 914-589-1368.
Finally, the College of Staten Island has finally agreed to let us teach scuba in their pool!
The next course is July 8th at 6pm and will run for 5 weeks.
Price for the course is $250 plus $50 for the textbook . Each student must provide his/her own mask, fins and snorkel, with the rest of the equipment being supplied by me.
Since this is the first course at CSI, the open water segment will be provided free.
Tell your uncertified friends this is the best deal that they are likely to see.
To reserve a spot, call me at the number below, or call CSI Department of Continuing Education directly at 718-982-2182.
