Three Witches Climb Plus Other adventures
Details
This week we will begin with an inland start, and remain inland with a nice loop heading south through Rancho Santa Fe toward the locally famous Three Witches Climb. This is also known as San Dieguito Road, but is called Three Witches since there are three defined uphill pitches on this approximately two mile climb. The average grade is 3%, so this is definitely approachable for all three groups.
The A and B groups will continue on through Carmel Valley/Rancho Bernando toward the Lake Hodges bridge and will return around the edge of the hills to the west of Escondido and return via the Twin Oaks climb. For those really wishing to turn up the heat, there's always the option of heading up Double Peak before the final descent through San Elijo.
The C group will turn around at the top of San Dieguito and return through Rancho Santa Fe. A and B route:

40.8 miles, 3600 ft climbing
C route:

23.1 miles, 1600 ft climbing
Michell is the C route leader, and depending on how your group feels, there's always the opportunity to do some exploring in Rancho Santa Fe if you'd like to lengthen the route.
There is also the option on the A/B route to "go around" the Twin Oaks climb. When I write up the turn by turn directions, I'll detail that option. Sometimes, you just aren't feeling it by that point in the ride, and it's a good route to know in case you find yourself in that spot. It's slightly longer, but not much.
These are challenging, but very scenic routes. We have the added bonus of getting to start downhill this time!
We will meet at the Wells Fargo parking lot in the new La Costa Town Square Shopping Center off Rancho Santa Fe in South Carlsbad. There's a Starbucks there for restrooms before the ride, and snacks after (also a Von's that sells some good nutrition if you need something for the ride).
NOTES: Please check your bikes the night before the ride and make sure the tires are fully inflated, and everything is in good working order. Please bring an extra tube, CO2 cartridge or hand pump, and enough fluid and snacks (suggestion: two bottles minimum for the longer rides, and two snacks). Helmets are always required, and we obey all traffic laws.
Our rides are no drop, and we make every effort to find the right group for you. There are three group leaders, with the following general average speed guidelines on mixed terrain:
A Group: 16-18 mph
B Group: 14-16 mph
C Group: 12-14 mph
