Parents of Teenagers Anonymous (PTA) was created to support and empower parents with empathy, acceptance and information.
Some teenagers present unique challenges above and beyond the usual issues of poor attitudes, poor grades or poor hygiene. Our teens force us to rethink our parenting styles, our values and our relationship to the larger community, as we wrestle with our young “rebels,” “drop outs,” “pot heads” and “party animals.” This group structure provides for absolute confidentiality, so that parents may freely discuss the challenges they face with their teen’s drug use and abuse, truancy, delinquency and gang involvement, sexual activity, motivational challenges and mental health concerns.
Attendees to the meetings are granted confidentiality and expected to grant the same to others. This is not a support group that purports to have all the answers. Nor does this group identify the “right” way to parent children or teenagers. Rather, tough issues are discussed with openness and nonjudgmental empathy. By sharing our challenges, failures and successes, we are the “village” that raises the child. The hope is to empower us all to be better, more confident parents.
Importantly, this group is not without expert advice. At every meeting, our group spends the second hour with a small group of professionals to present them with anonymous questions. These professionals have committed to attend and respond to questions, also without judgment or reprimand. Helpful information, resources and encouragement are available as we continue to help our kids reach the age of maturity – alive!
