This page had not been updated in a couple of years...whereas evey precaution that is talked about here is undoubtedly still available (and there are probably a lot more options for privacy now as well), the directions, links, tabs may have changed on your account screen.
Setting Your Privacy Levels
-preventing unwanted email solicitations and shouts-
Update - 10-12-08 - Members now have the ability to block or ban another member! Click on the offender's profile and you'll see a new tab at the top of the screen allowing this. Thank you Meetup!
It's been brought to my attention again that some of you are receiving emails from people you don't know that aren't members of this group. Be assured that these people do not have access to your email addresses. What they do is go into a group, look at the member list and look at event RSVP's. Depending on your personal privacy settings, they can click on the envelope next to your name and send you an email through meetup. They never see your actual email address. Now if you respond to any of these emails, it's up to you to protect the privacy of your address by choosing to either hide or not hide your email addy when you respond.
You do have control over whether these people can or can not send you emails (or put greetings on your profile).
To look at your privacy settings, click on 'Account' which is up at the top right hand corner of your screen when you are logged into meetup.com. Then select membership and communications. Scroll down toward the bottom until you see 'general preferences'. Here is where you can control who emails you and who can put shouts on your profile. You can choose to allow only the organizer and asst organizers be able to email you, only members of the groups that you belong to (suggested) or allow anyone on meetup to contact you (this is the setting that allows strangers to send you email solicitations). You have all the same choices for 'shouts'.
I encourage all of you to review your shout and email settings and make sure you are comfortable with your current privacy level. Additionally, you can hide group memberships so others can't see them, also not a bad idea.
If you have any questions about this, don't hesitate to contact one of the organizers.
Make it an awesome day! :)
