Brisk - Apache Hadoop powered by Cassandra

We'll meet for pizza and drinks at 5:30 and start the presentation at 6:00.

Datastax Brisk is an open-source distribution of Hadoop that leverages the high availability attributes of Apache Cassandra. Its goal is to provide a distribution that is simpler to operate, maintain, and use than other distributions. Stronger integration with Hadoop MapReduce including Hive and Pig will also open up opportunities to current Cassandra users beyond the real-time analysis that Cassandra excels at today.

He saw first hand the consequences of trying to solve real world scalability problems at the limit of what traditional relational databases are capable of.

Following points about Brisk seems interesting to me:
    1. No single point of failure. Nothing is dependent on name node. Hadoop is an aspect of Cassandra and Cassandra is not an aspect of Hadoop.
    2. If hadoop goes down, your Cassandra is always up and running serving your OLTP system. Only batch is down. No apparent down time to users.
    3. OLTP and OLAP nodes can be separately allocated and there is no data disconnect between OLTP and OLAP cluster. No manual data migration is required.
    4. No data loss – nothing is kept in memory all are persisted as soon as committed.
    5. Hive, Scope, Flume plug in and more hadoop ecosystem will be adapted in future.
    6. More naturally balanced cluster - use RandomPartitioner vs OrderPreservingPartitioner based read/write scenario – if used mostly from OLTP use RandomPartitioner and if used mostly from OLAP use Order preserving Partitioner etc.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
