From 0 to Streaming: Spark and Cassandra

Details

For this meetup, we are excited to be joined by Russell Spitzer, Software Engineer in Test at Datastax.

What You'll Learn At This Meetup:

Peanut Butter and Jelly should watch out, because a new power combination is in town: Spark and Cassandra. In the first half of this talk we’ll quickly touch on the fundamentals of these two technologies and how they complement each other. We will walk through short examples using the OSS Spark-Cassandra connector that show how easy it is to run complicated distributed jobs using this framework. Common C* tasks become simple when we utilize spark. The second half of the talk will be dedicated to using Spark-Streaming with Cassandra. Distributing streaming presents a great new paradigm for getting analytics on your data as it flows into your application. We’ll walk through an example Spark Streaming application with a Custom Receiver that seamlessly integrates into Apache C*.

About Russell Spitzer:

After grabbing his Ph.D in Bioinformatics Russell wanted to get more involved in the Big Data scene so he joined DataStax. As a software engineer in test he works day to day on the DataStax Enterprise integration between Cassandra, Hadoop, and Solr as well as occasionally patching Cassandra itself
