Ovelia, a popular Greek restaurant in Astoria, is excited to host their very first Gluten Intolerance Group Chef to Plate dinner on May 15. Many traditional Greek dishes are naturally gluten-free but Chef Peter Giannakas goes above and beyond to make sure that all of Ovelia's gluten-free customers are safely well-fed. Join us for a family-style Greek dinner in honor of Celiac Awareness Month

$27 per person includes a variety of traditional Greek dishes, tax, and tip.
Beverages are additional

  • Tzatziki: Greek yogurt with shredded cucumber and garlic spread served with carrots and cucumbers.
  • Greek Salad
  • Grilled Kalamari
  • Ovelia Loukaniko: Family recipe house made sausage
  • Kolokithia and Melitzanes w/ Skordalia: Assortment of grilled squash and eggplant served with a puree of potato and garlic
  • Gigantes Plaki: freshly baked lima beans in fresh tomato and onion sauce
  • Horiatiko Organic Chicken: served with a side of baby spinach

Take the N/Q train to 30th Avenue in Astoria. Get off train and walk up to[masked]th Ave. Ovelia will be on the left hand corner of 34th Street and 30th Avenue.

About the Chef to Plate Campaign

The Gluten Intolerance Group®, also known as GIG®, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded by private donations.

The Chef to Plate is a grass-roots campaign designed to help spread awareness of gluten sensitivities to people all over the world using restaurants that offer gluten-free menu options. This campaign is run at no cost to restaurants. We simply ask them to post educational materials detailing facts and statistics about gluten sensitivities during the month of May—National Celiac Awareness month. We provide the materials and mail them to the restaurants.

This campaign is in its fourth year and has shown marked growth every year. Last year, we reached more than 7 million people using over 900 restaurants. This year, we are going to reach even more, with over 1400 restaurants participating in 4 countries—the United States, Canada, Turkey, and Italy. We have plans to expand this Campaign even further next year.

    We missed our fearless leader, Erin, who was under the weather... but she made sure the venue took great care for our group and we had a delish dinner. Everything was fresh, juicy and flavorful...the best dishes by far were the Lima beans and tomato dish, along with the fab creamy tzatziki with the chicken. Great food and company made for a lovely night. Would definitely go again!

    Rebecca, I understand where you are coming from. When I meet with each restaurant, I talk to them specifically about gluten-free dining. I realize that many people who are gluten-free also avoid casein, but I do not usually discuss casein with the chefs. With this dinner at Ovelia, as well as all dinners in the NYC Meetup group, I ask all attendees to eat at their own risk. The restaurants do their best to accommodate GF, but since this is not your home it is up to you to choose to come.

    There are some people who are gluten intolerant as well as casein. It is a challenge as so many things could have casein without one knowing. Very few items include casein/whey labels but it is also a serious allergy with very fatal symptoms -- and some gluten intolerant folks have both. Please keep us in mind during the dialogue as well. Sorry about the initial typo. Trying recover from eating out on a gluten-free menu but not so sure if it had caseine...let's raise this awareness as well

  • the Meetup is rescheduled
  • you can cancel at least 3 day(s) before the Meetup

Additional notes: If you cannot attend this event but have already paid, you must email Erin Smith directly for your refund.

Payments you make go to the organizer, not to Meetup. You must make refund requests to the organizer.
