I am forming a group for artists and writers interested in creating sacred art in any medium. I am planning to have monthly sessions where I and others will present slides and discuss various aspects of sacred art in history (a subject of great interest to me for many years). This 20 - 30 minute slide discussion will be followed by quotes, prayers (from any tradition) and thoughts, after which everyone will have 2 - 3 hours to work individually in a supportive and meditative environment, which can then give rise to new or expanded artistic visions, and dedicated time to work in this vein. As background, I am a classically-trained artist with an MFA in Painting, and am also currently studying towards a second Master's Degree in Religion. I am both working on a figurative painting series, inspired by the mythology of many cultures and traditions, about women and transformation, and researching and writing a historical novel set in Ancient Egypt, late antique Athens, and the Medieval Middle Eastern world on similar religious and philosophical themes. Inspiration will be drawn from centuries of exquisite art, ranging from Egyptian and Sumerian wonders to Himalayan painting and sculpture, Islamic architecture, Renaissance painting and beyond . A small donation will be requested each month to share rental fee for the space, with location and first meeting to be confirmed soon! Location most likely in the Watertown/Cambridge/Arlington area. Field trips to museums, sacred dance performances, and more to be planned as well!
