HALLOWEEN CAMPING AT DEVILS DEN

  • October 31, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • Devils Den

WE WILL BE LEAVING THE CAMP SITE AT 9:00 am SATURDAY MORNING TO DRIVE UP TO THE SANTE FE PADDLE LAUNCH.

We will be camping and celebrating Halloween weekend at Devils Den. There are many activities to enjoy while camping this weekend. Camping is $10.00 per person / per night. For the non tent campers they have Cabins and Trailers for rent plus, if you have an RV, you can rent a site and bring it.

I addition to diving in Devils Den, we will be kayaking the Santa Fe Saturday and enjoying the many springs along the river. If you are "lucky" you may even get a glimpse of Naked Ed. There is horseback riding in the area, a pool and other interesting cave diving opportunities in the are.

We will celebrate Halloween Saturday night (costumes are welcome) and will be having a pot luck. Bring your favorite Halloween dishes to share.

Scuba Diving (per day)= $38.00 per person

Saturday & Sunday General Admission to cave (per day) $15.00 per person (effective 7/19/2014)
No Free Diving or Breath Hold Diving allowed (does not include rental gear)
(Snorkelers must have mask, snorkel, and fins.)

All night dives must be scheduled in advance. $15.00 each diver - 6 Diver minimum

Visit one of North America's most prehistoric places,

Devil's Den

-- an underground spring inside a dry cave in central Florida. The remains of many extinct animals from the Pleistocene Age (2 million - 10,000 years ago) were discovered at Devil's Den, including the bones of early man, dating back to 7,500 B.C.

The pleasant year-around temperature of 72 degrees in the Den allows comfortable diving, winter or summer. On cold winter mornings you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the cave's chimney. Hence, the early settlers called the place Devil's Den.

You'll find open water and cavern diving at its best & will be fascinated by the rock formations with stalactites and 33 million year old fossil beds, truly a natural wonder.

We had the entire RV camping area to ourselves which worked out very well. The bathrooms needed some TLC and most of us had cold showers. The day area around the cave entry is very scenic.

Am sorry to reply so late, but we were waiting to see if things improved. Stan woke up with vertigo this morning and hasn't been able to shake it all day, so we will not be camping tonight. We do hope it is better by tomorrow and plan on meeting you to go kayaking in the morning. We will be there by 9 a.m. If we are not you will know that things have not improved with him and we will not be coming at all. Sorry for the late notice. I am so disappointed.

It is going to be cold (35 degrees) and very windy (20-35 mph) on Saturday so make sure you stake your tents down and you bring warm gear. The springs will be

Sam I am not so sure I will be up to a night snorkle if it gets to cold.

      October 30

Kristina, I do not believe we can snorkel at night. I believe, from what I have read, night dives are only for divers.

I spoke with the people a Devils Den. Here is an update on when we can Snorkel or Dive. We need at least 10 Scuba Divers (not snorkelers) to book a night dive either Friday or Saturday night. I need to know who wants to do a night dive by noon Wed to be able to book. I plan to kayak the Sante Fe River Saturday and have the group snorkel Sunday (they say Saturday will be very crowded). We will be doing a "pot luck" dinner on Saturday night. Costumes on Saturday night if you wish (a day late I know).
We will be tent camping in the group camp site. I have booked it.
If you are going to be later than 6:00 pm on Friday I will try and post gate code when I get it. Call me if you need code after Friday 6:00pm

Looking for 3 other adults (children are welcome) wanting to horseback ride Saturday about 3 p.m. @$40 per person. Devil's Den is all booked up due to wedding parties so they referred me to TKO Farm (5560 NE State Rd in Williston) who can only accommodate 4 adults since they work mostly with children. It's a guided tour that's about 45 minutes. Our reservation cannot be confirmed until Thursday due to potential conflict at TKO.

    September 26

    • Linda W.

The Friday (10/31) Suwannee River paddle from Fanning Springs to Manatee Springs is a separate SLACKER meetup posting which says we'll meet at 8:30 at Devil's Den if anyone wants to sign up. I haven't heard anything about a paddle Saturday. I think people will be enjoying the Devil's Den snorkeling & diving.

      October 6

    • Dianne G.

In the write up it says we will be kayaking the Santa Fe on Sat.

    September 29

  • Donna T.

Thinking of taking my road bike to see what I can find around there Sunday morning-would like to get in 25-40 miles. Anyone with ideas?

    October 4

  • Linda W.

I'm trying to find out who might be interested in kayaking Friday, October 30, from Fanning Springs to Manatee Springs which is about a 4 hr paddle down stream. Anderson Outdoors Adventures will pick us up & our kayaks from Devil's Den, take us to Fanning Springs and bring us back to Devil's Den along with our kayaks for $100 if we have 5 people. Otherwise, it will cost $15-$25 from Manatee Springs SP to Fanning Springs depending upon the number of people. There is a $6 per car entrance fee to Manatee Springs SP, plus our gas, mileage, etc., so door-to-door service from Devil's Den sounds like a deal to me. Please let me know if you are interested asap.

Does anyone know if they offer scuba diving lessons there?

    September 25

    • Craig G.

I dont believe so. Many dive shops hold their check out dives in Devils den. Because Scuba takes several weeks, it really doesn't make sence to offer a Scuba cert in a remote location.
