A message from the new Chairman

Hello to everyone!

Getting ourselves organised

You will be pleased to know that we are taking steps to get the Central London Humanist Group properly organised along democratic lines. At a recent meeting of the Management Committee, we held a ?mini-AGM? at which I was appointed Chair and we agreed some other changes to the Committee members and their responsibilities. The idea is that we shall draw up proposals for a more formal membership, recognised by an annual subscription and members will have the right to put themselves forward and to vote for the officers and Committee (while still retaining our wider inclusive membership through the Meetup site). Clive, our Treasurer and outgoing Chair, has undertaken to draft those proposals, with a view to holding a proper AGM later in the year, probably in October.

For the time being the Committee will be as follows:

Officers: Alan Palmer Chair

Josh Kutchinsky Secretary

Clive Wilson Treasurer

Organisers: Gerard Earley Marketing & Special Events

Rupert Morris Editor and Deputy Treasurer

Alice Fuller Facebook

Asst. Organisers: David Miller

Sue Collingridge

Rob Mallows

Sapna Ramnani

????but I would like it to be the rule that we change places regularly and that no-one holds any position for too long. That way we?ll remain a vibrant team.

We are also getting ourselves officially affiliated to the British Humanist Association ? but we will remain an independent group, run for its members, by its members.

And solvent

Thanks to the voluntary (?2) donations at each meeting, we are now solvent. We have over ?500 in the bank, which means that we shall be able to book speakers and venues with confidence. We certainly don?t plan to get rich ? the funds are solely for the benefit of the Group and we?ll report fully on them at future AGMs.

Where we go from here

The Group has achieved tremendous growth over the past 18 months and we now have almost 300 names signed up on the Meetup site! That means we can start to be a bit more adventurous. To date we have been socialising regularly at the Penderel?s Oak in High Holborn on the first Wednesday of each month and enjoying speakers on the 3rd Wednesday. We?ve also had a visit to Down House, a boules party and a party to celebrate the Festive Season ? and a group is heading for the Darwin Exhibition at the end of this month.

Now I would like us to be more ambitious. How about some fundraising, community work or campaigning, so as to raise our public profile? (Just look at what the BHA?s bus advertising campaign is achieving!) How about getting to know each other better through more social events? Rather than it just being for the Committee to take the lead, I rather like the idea of individuals coming forward with suggestions that they are prepared to lead on ? and we?ll do our best to support them, provided we think they are the sort of things the Group should be doing. Where any money is involved, our Treasurer, Clive, would of course like to know up front so that we can be comfortable about any risks involved.

So please give us your feedback.

Finally, I?m hopeless with names, but I?ll do my best to get to know as many of you as I can, so please look me out at our gatherings.

Best wishes to all

Alan Palmer
