Dear Members,

I’m really looking forward to welcoming lots of you to our First General Meeting on Wednesday 20 January.

As many of you know, up till now we have remained a very informal group, led by a self-appointed committee. With such a large membership (573 at the latest count!), we now think it time to regularise ourselves - democratically and to ensure proper governance. After all – this is your group.

You will have seen the agenda on the Meetup site, the most important items being, I think, the adoption of a Constitution and the election of the Committee. With your help, I hope to get through the formal business fairly quickly so that we can sit back and enjoy listening to our Special Guest Speaker, Andrew Copson, who is the newly-appointed CEO of the BHA.

Please don’t be put off for fear that this will be one of those AGM’s where you turn up and find yourself arm-twisted into joining the Committee – we already have sufficient volunteers – but you are still welcome to put yourself forward for election. We shall also appreciate help from non-Committee members in organising specific events, acting as greeters, etc.

You will have seen a list of the sort of functions we need to do – at this stage this is just an indication and we will share out jobs at the first Committee meeting according to what people would like and what they feel able to do. We don’t have many Committee meetings, but there does need to be enough of us to share the load.

Apart from the official roles of Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, we will be electing 6 others to the Committee. So, if you would like your name to be put forward for election, please let me know formally by e-mail ([address removed]) by no later than Sunday 17th January, enclosing your name, contact details and any indication of what job you would like to do. At the Meeting itself, I shall ask each of you to stand up and say a few words about yourself. If there turns out to be more than 9 applicants, then we shall need to have an election.

Finally – if anyone would like to propose a resolution for debate at the Meeting, please will they let me have the wording by no later then Sunday 17th January.

A Happy New Year to All – see you at the Meeting

Alan Palmer
