Wednesday Central Phoenix Writing Workshop Meetup

PLEASE NOTE! Due to people/things beyond our control the overflow parking that was in the lot on the SW corner of McDowell and 3rd Ave is no longer available! Please park in the Hob Nob's Lot or somewhere down 3rd Ave!

Due to the success of the group, we are adding another half hour to the beginning of our Wednesday meeting. The first half hour will be a time to organize and exchange ideas. If you have content to share, please present it to one of the moderators by no later than 6:45PM. We will begin reading and critiques promptly at 7PM.

This is an informal gathering every week that is designed to promote feedback on work, and to highlight the strengths of one's work as well as offer ideas to improve weaknesses. Attendees are encouraged to bring pieces to read that they are comfortable sharing. Poems, Essays, and stories are all fair game. Generally, anything over 4-6 pages will be read over several sessions. We recommend bringing extra copies if you can.

The general flow is some gab time at first. Then people will read the works out loud (or ask someone else to) one at a time and usually ask for feedback. Some people want help with their work, others might just want grammar lessons. If someone has lots of feedback, it is usually best to mark up a copy and hand it back.

The meeting generally lasts about two hours. If someone has to leave early, let everyone know so your work can be read first.  Likewise, if you will be late but intend to read, let the moderators know in advance.

5 participants contributed to John Daleiden's breakout group at the Hob Nobs Central Phoenix Writing Workshop. The pieces were diverse, including: Cesi Hampson--an editorial for an on line Woman's Journal; Lori Heine--a chapter from her novel; Vess Quinlan--a short story; Bob Scanlan--a chapter in his organ transplant memoir; and one poem. Excellent critique was given for all writings. Patrons in an adjoining room were were loud making it difficult to hear the readers at times.

The group was wonderful. Everyone's work was great, and we had a wide variety. Now that we're beginning to really get to know each other, we can follow each other's progress, which is very beneficial. The only drawback to the evening was the frat party, or whatever it was, going on in the next room. Some of the patrons in that area were extremely loud.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
