Hanging Rock Hike!

Nestled in the Sauratown Mountains and not far from the cities of the Triad and Triangle areas, there's another North Carolina to be discovered. The sheer cliffs and peaks of bare rock, quiet forests, cascading waterfalls and views of the piedmont plateau that stretch for miles from Hanging Rock State Park make for a great day of adventure! Join us as we hike the Moore's Knob Trail and then up to Hanging Rock itself. If time permits, we may take the short hike to Upper Cascades Falls.

We are inviting Triangle chapter, Charlotte chapter and the new Triad chapter as well so it should be a nice sized group to hike with.

Required Items: Hiking Shoes and Warm Weather Hiking Attire, Water - 2 liters, Lunch and Snacks
Recommended Items: Camera, Trekking Poles, a Smile!

Distance: Moore's Knob Trail 4.7mi loop(plus short walk along lake), Hanging Rock 2.6mi round trip. Total 7.5 miles.
Terrain: Moderate, some rocky areas
Elevation Gain: Moore's Knob 880 feet, Hanging Rock 590 feet
Rating: Moderate due to steep but short sections of climbing
Expected Pace: Moderate 2mph, slower on climbs.
Expected Duration: 6 hrs including time for views and lunch

Drive time: From Triangle (Durham REI) 2 hours, from Triad (Greensboro REI) 1 hour, from Charlotte (REI Northlake) 2 hours.

Please carpool! Save gas and save parking spaces!

Triangle Carpool: Durham REI at 6911 Fayetteville Road. Meet by 8:00am and rollout at 8:15am sharp.
Triad Carpool and Rendezvous: Greensboro REI at 3334 West Friendly Avenue. Meet by 9:15am and rollout at 9:30am sharp.
Charlotte Carpool: Charlotte REI at 9755 Northlake Centre Parkway. Meet by 8:00am and rollout at 8:15am sharp.

Please be courteous and bring $5-10 for gas share. Or at least by them a drink later!

We are meeting at the main park visitor center. Look for my maroon red Subaru Crosstrek (small crossover/hatchback) with the Outdoor Club South front license plate.

Please note! It can be difficult to coordinate and rendezvous with different Meetup groups so I am asking everyone to please be prompt and on time as well as patient. We can't wait for those arriving late. It's not fair to the group and it means less time on the trails. So please arrive at the carpools or rendezvous on time, gassed up, and already having used the restroom. Those leaving from Triangle area we will stop and rendezvous with the Triad group on our way.

Everyone is also invited to join us for the Triad chapter's inaugural social at Hickory Tavern which is also conveniently on the way home for everyone! Social begins at 6:30pm but those on the hike may arrive a bit earlier.
