Well, our group (of four, this time) went (after meeting at Cathey's from 7 to 9 PM) to Big Ben’s again, finishing up a little after 1 AM. We discussed several topics, as usual, including whether the question as to why there is something rather than nothing at all was simply one with no agreed-upon answer yet, or whether it was basically an unanswerable question (and if so, why). We also talked about economic issues, including what is likely to happen in the near future, and why. We also talked about whether we humans are on the brink of creating life from non-living materials, and what this would mean. And we considered whether the existence of God was a reasonable conclusion using inductive reasoning. Most of all, we tried to clarify, if we believed something, why we believed it. No topic is too profound for our intrepid group to tackle. And as soon as we are all in agreement with regard to the answers to our most fundamental questions, we will announce our results to the world.
And remember, everyone is welcome to our group, no matter how “far out” his or her beliefs might seem to some others. So if you want to stretch your mind as far as it will stretch and strengthen your ability to understand those who believe differently, this is the group for you.
During the administrative portion of our meeting, we again discussed the possibility that some first-timers (especially women) might feel intimidated going to a private home. We decided to make our next meeting at Amelie’s. Derik is volunteering to pay the $70 to reserve seats for us that night. Terry W (who is coming back to our group after a brief absence) said he would do the same for the meeting after that. This is an experiment to see if it will make a difference, though of course, because of the rather variable attendance anyway, it will be difficult to attribute the number of people attending just to where the meeting is being held. (It would be great if we got word from a lot of people with regard to whether it would make a difference, one way or the other.)
At any rate, please note that our next meeting, on Sunday, 10/23/11 at 7PM, will be at Amelie’s (2424 North Davidson St #102).
And we who have been meeting continue to feel okay about our somewhat rambling, non-topic-focused discussions. If anyone has a specific topic he or she would like specifically focused on, that proposal will be considered by those attending the meeting.
