Intermediate Skills Series - May 15: More Efficient Forward, Reverse and Stern Rudder Strokes

These “a la carte” courses are designed for people who may have been paddling for a while, but have never had any formal instruction AND/OR for those who want to fine tune their skills.

We’ll focus on different skills each week and you can pick and choose which courses you want to take. You’ll come away from each session with better boat control skills, or better rescue strategies, and a lot more confidence.

Don’t have a boat? No worries – rentals are available for an additional $20.00.  Request one when you RSVP

Here's a list of all of the courses in the series.  This posting is ONLY for the course highlighted in bold.  Look at the other dates on the calendar to sign up for other courses.

·  May 15: More efficient forward, reverse and stern rudder strokes

·  May 22: Edging and turning strokes (edging, sweep, pivot, low brace turn)

·  May 29: Draw strokes (in-water recovery; sculling, draw on the move, side slip)

·  June 19: Bracing and sculling (support strokes)

·  June 26: Rescues: T-rescue: heel hook re-entry; paddle float

One of my original objectives when starting Chesapeake Kayak Adventures was to offer members high quality kayak instructional courses at very reasonable prices. I searched high and low for the best way to do just that last year and finally found it in the form of a kindred spirit by the name of Rick Wiebush.

Rick is from Catonsville and runs Cross Currents Sea Kayaking. He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Open Water Instructor and an Instructor Trainer (i.e. he trains people who want to be certified as ACA instructors).

Rick has been paddling for about 12 years and has been an instructor for six years. He is known as having a pretty laid back, patient and humorous approach to teaching, and is very passionate about helping people ramp up their skills.

There is a 4 person minimum for the class to take place with a 12 person maximum. The $50.00 course fee must be paid by debit or credit card at the time you sign up. The courses will take place rain or shine except in the most inclement conditions. If your plans change and you are unable to attend, credit will be given toward future course offerings.

The forecast has taken a dire change for the worse in the past couple of hours. The severe storm that wasn't supposed to get here until much later tonight now appears to be hitting the area around 7:00 PM according to the National Weather Service. As a result we are now canceling the class. Sorry about the last minute flip flop here. Tentative rescheduling date is next Wednesday May 21st

Not that the forecast is corroperating, but is this still being held on May 21st (tomorrow)? I haven't seen anything either way.

Sorry I didn't get this out before Jim - the current plan is to reschedule for Tuesday, June 3rd. Too many people had a conflict with tonight

Interested in this course if rescheduled or offered later, though I cannot do the 21st.

I've been reviewing the forecast and actual conditions in the area around Big Branch. It looks like we should hit a high temp in the mid 70's under mostly cloudy skies with a very small (10%) chance of rain. The winds continue to be a slight concern but should be at a level that Rick and I believe actually enhances the learning opportunities for this class. The class is definitely ON. I'll see you all this evening. Thanks to the wind you might want to bring a light jacket.

Hi Chuck: Will this class be repeated? I have an obligation tomorrow. I know how to do forward, backward and C strokes. And I have been SUPing. Is this the right level of class for me?

If this course get's repeated it won't be until late summer early fall. I think this would be a good course for you.

Just a heads up to those of you attending that I will be getting my DETAILS email out this evening between 10 and 11. I'm sure you may have a couple questions and the email should answer them

I wish I could go, but I can't get out of work early that day. If this one is offered again later, I hope to sign up. It was quite enlightening to find out I couldn't paddle the new kayak without the skeg.

Sign ups for this course seem to be lagging behind the others in the Intermediate series. I suspect that's because many of you assume that you've got these strokes down.

Based on my observations of you all on the water absolutely nothing could be further from the truth. These are the strokes that everything else builds on. If you don't have these strokes right you won't get anything else right.

I don't know anyone that can't use a refresher on these strokes, even those who have been kayaking for for a long time. Perhaps especially those who have been kayaking for a long time.
