http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/7/f/8/event_245670712.jpegThe moon will not only be full on June 23rd, it will also be the closest it will be to the Earth all year and until August of next year. What does this mean? It is called a "supermoon". (It is also a little bigger to photograph.)

Since sunset will be at 8:29 PM and Moonrise is at 8:40 PM we may actually be able to get some shots of downtown at sunset with the moon in them. The moon will not be over Navy Pier until about 11:30, and at that time it will be about 20 degrees high, if things go well I might stick around that long. One reason that I picked Fullerton is because there are some trees and rocks that could be incorporated into the shot, the other is that it is easy for me to get to.

To answer some (I hope all) common questions:

  1. You will need a tripod.
  2. You will need a wide angle lens to get both the moon and the city in a shot.
  3. You will need a telephoto to get anywhere near filling a frame with the moon. (Even 500mm is not enough.)
  4. Yes, there are many sites on the web that explain how to expose for the moon.
  5. Parking will be tight at that time along Cannon and Stockton drives. There may be parking at the Notebaert museum or the Lincoln Park Zoo lot. Those are expensive, you might want to consider parking elsewhere and taking a bus the rest of the way. That is all I know about parking.
  6. The CTA has an excellent trip planner at transitchicago.com.
  7. The meetup will end when you decide to leave.
  8. I will be the guy with a camera on a tripod. I usually say "yes" if you walk up and say "Is this the meetup?" Once I start shooting I do not check my phone for messages that you may post here.
  9. Since this is weather dependent (as in an overcast sky hiding the moon), I will decide two hours before the meetup whether it is still on or not. You should check back here at that time (5:30).

**** MEETUP CANCELLED **** Looks like storms are approaching both from the South and West, and even if they do pass by in the next 2-3 hours it looks like heavy cloud cover will be following them.
