I went to kindergarten in Germany, which definitely gave me a leg-up when I took 3 years of German in high school (along with 2 years of Latin). I have definitely lost most of my proficiency from lack of usage. My current level is a mastery of year 1 HS German, and maybe some mastery of a years 2 and 3. I have forgotten so much that my vocabulary is very limited. However, I have a very good grasp of grammar on paper (those Latin classes helped a lot with overall grammar skills!) - but that doesn't translate well to actual conversations. My skills are very stiff and formal, with not quite enough vocab to hold a real conversation outside of textbook-like sentences.
Having childhood memories of Germany and a basic level of knowledge of the German language has always inspired me to learn more about the culture, language, and becoming a fluent speaker. I am also a lover of all languages and really enjoyed all the classes I have taken. I would love to learn French, Spanish, and Italian too, but German will always be first in my heart. I have always wished to go back to Germany, and now a trip to Deutschland or Österreich and speaking fluently is one of my highest goals and the reason I would like to join this group. I do have a little bit of German ancestry, but not enough to really say I'm German. I also have 3 German friends in Chicago that I would like to be able to converse with.
Hallo, Ich heisse Carrie. My family was stationed in Germany when I was a child in kindergarten. Since then my family has always used a little German around the house, and we love the German holiday baked goods. I would love to practice my German!
