The Art of Letting Go (with David Haskin)

Join us for a one-day retreat sponsored by the Chicago Weekly Sitting Meditation Group Saturday, February 8,[masked]AM-5PM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1218 W. Addison Street, Chicago, IL with David Haskin

When we open to life as it truly is, and to ourselves as we truly are, we can live more freely and become profoundly available to life. This opening enables us to make wiser life decisions and experience deep joy and connection.

To open in this way, though, we must learn the often-challenging art of letting go. With the practice of Mindfulness, we can learn to let go of clinging to ideas, past events, projections of the future, views or desires that keep us from the joy and growth-filled present.

Please join us for this one-day Mindfulness retreat in which we will practice Mindful meditation and movement, practical exercises and sharing to deepen our ability to let go and, in so doing, develop a greater sense of ease and friendliness toward ourselves and others.

This retreat is appropriate for both newcomers to Mindfulness and meditation and for experienced practitioners.

Cost: $25 per person. Fees cover the cost to use the facility but do NOT include compensation for the teacher. Following an ancient tradition, David offers these teachings freely and will gratefully accept dana, or a free-will offering, at the end of the retreat if you are able and if you find the teachings helpful. Anyone facing financial challenges who would like to come should plan to attend. Please contact the organizer for more information regarding scholarships.

Date, Time and Location: Saturday, February 8,[masked]AM-5PM. We will meet in the Passavant Room on the second floor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1218 W. Addison Street, Chicago (Addison and Magnolia). Use the northern-most entrance on Magnolia Street. Please plan to arrive at or before 9:45AM so we can start the day at 10AM.

Parking: You will not need a parking permit unless your car will still be parked after 6PM. (Restricted parking goes from 6PM to 6AM.) Guest parking passes for the 383 parking district are available for purchase for .50 cents.

Comfort and lunch: Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. If you use a meditation cushion or bench, please bring it. Chairs will also be available for meditation. Please note that much of this retreat will be conducted in Noble Silence. Bring a brown bag lunch and a beverage for the meal at noon.

As the benefits of this deeply rich retreat continue to unfold for me, I wanted to express my gratitude once again towards everyone who was present & helped in making this unique event a highly beneficial one. Dave's teachings surely resonated with me, like a singing bowl announcing the beginning of a meditation period. May everyone see clearly where their suffering resides and become free from it through the art of letting go. Thanks to all for sharing your energy & insights. Also, special thanks for warmly embracing our visiting members. With a deep bow of gratitude. Much Love to all!

Sure... it took three intelligent men to "fix" the thermostat and one woman to say "the heat is already on you guys." :-)

Pretty heartfelt - Thanks David Haskin! Few words should've been shared on the actual meditation technique; the newbies were huffing and puffing.....

Do we pay at the event on Saturday, Feb 8th?

    February 4, 2014

    • Mary J.

      Can we pay by check?

      February 5, 2014

    • Steve S.

Hi Mary. A check is not preferable as we are not a not-for-profit and don't have "entity" status in the State of Illinois. By the same token, our group pays rent to use the facility and provide housing for the presenter. If you do need to write a check, it will have to be made out to "Stephen Starr."

To clarify my comments about parking... a 383 permit is NOT required unless the car is still there after 6PM.

Too bad I won't be there for some time, retreats are of interest to me. I live overseas part time..

I've attached the link to The Western Australian Buddhist Society's site. The Abbot monk is Ajahn Brahm. His meditations and Dhamma talks are streamed internationally on Friday nights 7:30 Perth time. After the talk three questions are taken from anywhere in the world. It's well worth checking out. There are many of his talks on youtube but you must go through this site to get to the live talks. Check it out you don't need to be a member, it's there for all.
