Updates, Backups & Maintenance

The upside to working with WordPress is how flexible it is and how easy it is for a site owner to do their own editing. The price we pay for this is that the software is in pretty constant need of updating. Ignoring updates and not backing up your site, puts you in peril of malware, infections and losing everything.

Come join us as we look at and demo the various ways that you can take care of your site, from the very simplest manual ways to using plugins. I will demo a simple database export and using the plugin BackupBuddy. Our own Steve Stern will show us Infinite WordPress and Sean Hayes will show us Press Backup. This promises to be a very informative evening!

As always, we start at 6 with a meet and greet and there is always someone available if you have a specific question on your site. The presentation begins at 7.

You are welcome to bring your laptop, but bringing a hotspot and a fully charged battery is recommended. The Holiday Club router and plugs are very limited.

Interesting news: A lower cost plan from Vault Press for backups. It's actually affordable now. http://www.wptavern.com/a-vaultpress-everyone-can-afford

Both Backup Buddy and Press Backup appear to be paid plugins. Are there any free plugins available?

Very useful, glad I could ride my bike and whiz past all those sports fans. So, I thought of a question now, just out of curiosity ... why do I need a plugin to create a backup? Is it simply the convenience (automation/restore features) that make the plugin route preferable to "other" ways (that I don't fully comprehend involving MySql)?

Emily, you could use the control panel to dump your database and FTP the contents to your PC, but that's kind of tedious. The idea of getting the backup is to make it so painless that you'll do it (or have it done automatically) so you are always current. If you have to think about it or dedicate 10-15 minutes to a multi-step procedure, it won't last.

Thanks Steven, and thank you for your presentation!

Sorry everyone, I didn't realize there was a game tonight. This time of year I ride my bike in. I've just looked at the schedule and we don't run into this issue again until September.

Thanks for checking--that was exactly what I was wondering! Hoping to make it through the summer--maybe will skip Sept (if my schedule still ties me to auto for this).

Yea, or I may try and reschedule for that month - we'll try and work something out.

    Links I didn't give:

    WP Backup to Dropbox: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-backup-to-dropbox/

    Infinite WordPress: http://infinitewp.com/

Both are free with paid add-ons.

Neighborhood full of "Cubs Game Parking $20"--I turned around and came home.

I parked on Sheridan about a block north of Irving in a free spot. There are also metered spaces directly in front on Irving that are not used by the folks going to the game.

    Good stuff tonight.
Sorry I had to duck out early for an 8:30 conference call.

    See y'all next month.

Hmm, looks like the theme is "avoid meetups on game nights..."

I'm still wondering about this big hoax that Baseball is actually a sport.

Guys standing around in the grass for 3 hours?

First WP meetup. Happy I came -- both the topics and the people were very interesting. Thanks to all.

Great information about backups and how to use them for moving a site, restoring, etc.

I turned around as well. Took 20 minutes just to go two miles on Irving Park!

Sorry to say, I turned around when I figured out what the traffic jams meant. I hope it went well. Sorry to have missed it.

Will I be too lost if I am a beginner?

    1 · April 29, 2013

    • Becky D.

No. This will go from basics to more advanced solutions and how to protect your site is a must for everyone!

As usual, looking forward to this event. I hope we'll have a discussion about the update process when you're using a modified "standard" or custom theme.

    April 11, 2013

    • Becky D.

Be sure to ask about that Jeff. If you've edited a theme that then gets updated, you may be in trouble. If you've created a child theme, then you're good.

I am SO going to try to make it. But I have grandma duty on Wednesdays, so it's a little dicey.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
