Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve (west of Batavia) is a great place to get your legs into shape for x-country skiing. It is a wooded glacial kame rising 50+ ft. over the surrounding countryside. The drive looping around the mound is wide, paved, and is shared by Fox Valley hikers and cyclists getting into and staying in shape. Base to base the west part of the drive is 0.5 mi. There is outhouse at the top of the hill. Drinking water is shut down for the season. There is occasional vehicle traffic moving 5 to 10 mph on the drive.
If anyone wants to join me I usually do 2 hrs of up & down, base to base walking/jogging (OK not much jogging) on the west part of the drive Saturday & Sunday mornings. I’m back on to my regular weekend schedule (Sat & Sun 9-11 am) and continue to x-country skiing season starting on Jan 4. If you see a red Jeep Commander in the parking lot, I'm on the mound.
Aftrewards we can head down to Fox Valley Winery in Oswego on Rt 34. It’s about ½ hr drive south of Johnson's Mound FP. Feel free to join me to taste or purchase wine, or just do the hike. Alternatively, we can head to one of the microbreweries in the area or one of the local bar/cafés for lunch.
