Maker Track: Welcome Groovy to the ASF

Details

Get involved in Open Source! If you haven't heard the very popular Groovy language is moving to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). All projects in the ASF are required to have a community and even though Groovy has a strong and established community lets show some Chicago love by doing some learning and hacking. We will have 2 tracks of work that attendees can choose from based on your interests:

  1. I want to learn Groovy!

Learn Groovy by Koan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C5%8Dan)! For this track we'll work together with fellow developers to do the following Groovy Koans (https://github.com/cjudd/groovy_koans). Get fast feedback and test your assumptions through tests. The examples will use Groovy, Gradle, and Spock.

  1. I want to hack Groovy!

So you know a little bit about Groovy, perhaps you're already done some language development, and you'd like to have some fun contributing to Open Source. This track will involve picking some JIRA's from the Groovy project, pulling down the source, and doing some work to improve the language. So pull of a chair and make a difference and sharpen your skills with your fellow CJUG members.

  1. Groovy/IoT
  • Write a Groovy connector for Arduino using RXTX or Ardulink (lead: Justin Rodenbostel)

  • Write an Android Groovy app to detect beacons (lead: Luis Feliu)

  • Write a Groovy app for the Raspberry Pi that will accept incoming requests and use Pi4J to transfer the request from a Raspberry Pi to an Arduino (lead: Luis Feliu)

Feel free to bring your own Groovy/IoT project as well.
