Study group for An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in R
Hosted by The Chicago R User Group (CRUG)
Details
UPDATE: We will now be holding a meetup weekly as part of Chi Hack Night. Details below.
We will be meeting again this coming Tuesday, August 4th, in the same place – Chi Hack Night at Braintree’s Offices on the 8th floor of the Merchandise Mart. The Hack Night begins at 6pm and our breakout group will begin around 7:30pm after introductions and the presentation portion of Hack Night. The organizers of Hack Night would really appreciate it if people arrived at the latest by 6:15pm when the event kicks off, however if it’s hard to get there by then due to work etc., it would be great if you could arrive by 6:40pm, which is when the presentation begins, as a courtesy to the presenters.
If you are planning to attend PLEASE register at http://bit.ly/1EuZvhP . Chi Hack Night needs a headcount in order to plan for food as well as to give your names to Braintree’s security to allow you access to the Hack Night. Please note that space is limited, so register soon! Please only register if you are certain you’ll be able to attend, as there are several people who would like to be part of these groups.
Next week we will continue in the 2 groups that we broke out into last week, a group for Beginners (those less familiar with R or who need a refresher) and those at a more Intermediate level. Piazza sites to help each group collaborate have been created as well. Resources and links for the class are included in these sites.
Beginners Group
Piazza site: https://piazza.com/online_r_learning_school/summer2015/101
Access code: 101
Hosted by: Helen Cronin
The Beginners Group is planning to read and complete the exercises from Chapter 2 for next week, discuss the content, and work through problems people had with the exercises. We’ll likely chose some additional R exercises to complete for the following week to get everyone comfortable (suggestions welcome!)
Intermediate Group
Piazza site: https://piazza.com/online_r_learning_school/summer2015/201
Access code: 201
Hosted by: Matt Sweeney
The Intermediate Group is also planning to read and complete exercises from Chapter 2 for next week, present a summary, and go through questions about the material. They’ll follow that with some time working through an interesting data set to test the skills that were presented. They will then likely be moving on to Chapter 3 for the following week.
Going forward we will be using the Piazza sites as our main way of communicating (as opposed to Meetup), so please feel free to post any questions or comments there. If you have any logistics related questions, please feel free to reply to me.
