November R Meet-Up: Beginner's Night

R is a powerful tool, but it can be quirky, especially for beginners. Join us for our annual Beginner's Night and climb that learning curve faster!

Presenters will be

  • Chase Carpenter - Getting Help
  • Adam Hogan - Basics of Data Munging
  • Jeff Ryan - Getting Started with Graphics
  • Paul Teetor - Managing Your R Software

The presenters will be available afterwards with their laptops to answer your questions. Please feel free to bring your laptop, too, and show us what's on your mind.

We will have 5 books to give away, all useful to R newbies.

As always, free pizza will be available, courtesy of Revolution Analytics, the sponsor of CRUG.

Doors open at 5:30. Presentations begin at 6:00, give or take. See you at Jak's!

Perhaps it's just the nature of a "Beginners' Night" but I thought the overall tone of most of the presenters was patronizing and condescending. I especially didn't like the tone of the person (I can't remember his name) who presented about graphics. He continually disparaged ggplot2, and referred to it as "Hadley's package", using Hadley Wickham's first name. That was patronizing in the extreme. Everyone is entitled to his or her own preferences -- I happen to particularly like ggplot2, but I don't expect everyone to have the same opinion as I do. But to continuously put down someone else's package in such a manner was unseemly, in my opinion.

Practical guru gems for beginners. I learned new stuff even though I've been using R for over a year now.
