1. Introduction. This meetup group is run by Christians and welcomes Christians and non-Christians alike to get together to play games including Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). D&D is a social, roleplaying activity much like impromptu theatre wherein players take the roles of character in a fantasy setting such as the noted Christian theologian C.S. Lewis' Narnia, or Tolkien's Middle Earth. Like characters in a book or movie, the players must make decisions based on their own experiences.
None of this play involves anything to do with the occult, any more than watching a "Narnia" movie that involves the powerful Aslan, the evil White Witch, or mythical creatures such as centaurs and fauns does. Playing the game is not in itself inconsistent with Christian morality; just like on a sports field, the only wrongdoing that might result is due to normal human flaws.
2. Policies. This meetup group has some simple policies for its get-togethers. All meetings should be conducted with an eye toward wisdom, our witness, and all applicable laws. Games should be family-friendly, without lewdness, foul language, alcohol abuse or illegal substances. All behavior (either real or imaginary) will be consistent with this family-friendliness and basic Christian morality. Any minors who wish to play with us will need to be accompanied by a designated guardian who agrees to be responsible for them. Our players will not be engaged in anything that might be interpreted as "occult" or contrary to Christianity. Games held in a public place, such as a church or library, will respect and conform to the hosts's policies.
3. Game Play Philosophy: Gamemasters and players are responsible for their own play, case-by-case, and should exhibit good judgment. We are not trying to dictate how to play, but rather to encourage everyone to be mindful of the potential relationship between their own reputations and their actions in the game itself. Just as in sports, a player can't be a dirty player on the field and expect to be seen as clean in their personal life.
Anyone is welcome to play, regardless of their religious background. We're not trying to proselytize. We're just trying to play a fun game in a safe environment. Additionally, we have no overarching "Statement of Faith" for our members, but each player's faith affects point-of-view and conversation, and it may come out in various aspects of gameplay. While anyone is invited to join us to play regardless of religious background, all Game Masters (GMs) should guide play to conform to these principles.
We play in fictional settings, some of which involve "magic." In these fictional worlds "magic" is generally a continuation of the natural order of things, rather than anything to do with evil, spiritism, or the occult.
Player characters should not normally commit evil acts; such acts should not be routinely rewarded. Elements and twists of plot may create exceptions - these are general principles. Regardless of the use of "alignments" which dictate how "good" or "bad" a character is, GMs will actively discourage players from playing in ways that would negatively affect the overall morality and tone of the game. While in many cases a character may not always make the best decisions, the natural progression of character development should show players and their characters generally trying to work toward a positive outcome.
Remember that, though the game is not the real world, our fantasy can affect our own real morality and the way others see us. Neither players nor GMs should revel in in-game activity which in real life would be clearly immoral, while leaving liberty for the characters to make bad or foolish choices. GMs should challenge their players to consider the consequences of personal greed, of solving problems through force, of acting as vigilantes, or of other questionable in-game actions.
