“If I want to see freaks, I can just look out the window” –Johnny Eck

A film that was banned in the UK for 30 years after it was released. A film so shocking that a woman claimed to suffer a miscarriage because of it. A film that terrified and disgusted general public as well as MGM. I could only be talking about Tod Browning’s Freaks.

Release Date: February 20th, 1932

Aspect Ratio: 1.37:1

Running Time: 63 Minutes

Country: USA

Adapting the short story Spurs, Freaks was a film that Browning was trying to make since the 20s. What drew Browning to the short story in the first place? Do you remember when you were young and threatened to run away and join the circus? Well Tod Browning not only threatened such an action he actually followed through with it. Browning would work in the circus until he met D.W. Griffith and became an actor. He made his acting debut in Griffith’s film Intolerance. A film that was born from the outcry against his previous film Birth on a Nation.

Browning made some hits with Lon Chaney (The Unholy Three, The Unknown, and London After Midnight) but it wasn’t until the success of Dracula that Browning was giving the freedom to work on his passion project. Browning decided to cast real circus performers in the film which didn’t sit well with executives. The woman who claimed a miscarriage and threatened to sue MGM was one of the audience members in a test screening of the film that as you may have guessed did not go very well. Trying to make the film less offensive the studio cut out over 20 minutes of footage that they deemed too offensive. The cut footage is sadly been lost. Even with the film cut a lot of theaters refused to show the film. Freaks died at the box office taking Browning’s career with it.

This Showing will be a shown at the Headquarters which is smoke free, inmate environment with limited space.

Since space is limited I appreciate some notice if possible if you have rsvp'd but are not able to attend the showing. It would allow others to rsvp who might be able to attend.

The Headquarters is in a decent area in the NE so there are many food options. I will be taking orders if any one would like any thing delivered. (Let me know in advance if you are thinking of ordering food.)

A warning for anyone with bad allergies, we do have a cat and dog residing here but the cat spends most of his time outdoors so hopefully his presence won’t be too much of a deterrent.

I look forward to seeing you there.

The last scene along with the wedding party are very iconic scenes. The one of us line as been referenced in more than a few films.

Sorry to bail, but something came up. Hope to come next week for Seventh Seal, which I've never seen.

Don't worry about it things happens. I'm sure The Seventh Seal will be up your alley. Bergman's films are always visually compelling.

Mind blowing film! (I believe the first time I saw this was in a downtown SF theater on Market st with Eraserhead.) The disk I rented in subsequent viewings came with very interesting bonus features. I would love to see this one again but lean toward evaluating how classes at PSU are rolling - unfortunately past experience has dictated very little downtime in this arena. Regardless, thanks for this gem Damon.
