Does a Design require a Designer? Where philosophy, science and religion touch.

This will be a discussion reaching into a touchpoint between philosophy, science and religion. There will be some academics familiar with the philosophy of science.

Does a Design Require a Designer?

Summary: A classic argument for the existence of God is the argument from Design. Simply put it goes like this:

1. The world appears to have been designed.
2. A design requires a designer.
3. Therefore, The world has a designer.

We are going to have a discussion centered around premise #2. What is the relationship between a design and a designer and does the one require the other?

This discussion will be formatted as follows. There will be a pro-team and a con-team and there will be an audience. The teams will be granted 10-15 minutes to prepare their case. Each member of the pro-team will be allowed to present support for the proposition (premise #2). Then a member of the con-team will be allowed to rebut. Then members of the audience are allowed to direct questions to either side. Then the next member of the pro-team will be allow to continue. This cycle will continue until the pro-team has exhausted it’s arguments. Then the audience can direct final questions. Then the con-team will be allowed to make a final statement. Then the pro team will be allowed to make a final statement.
